Chapter 33 Everyone Kept Reminding Her
"You want a divorce?" Sylvia looked as if she had just heard a joke, her face filled with disbelief. "You've liked Albert since high school. You finally got what you wanted. Are you sure you want a divorce?"
Yvette's eyes were somewhat vacant and confused. She lowered her head, lost in thought.
Sylvia frowned. "What's the reason, anyway? Did Albert say something to you? Oh, wait. Violet came to see you today. Was it Violet?" Thinking of Violet, Sylvia's became agitated, and her voice grew louder. "That shameless woman. What did she say to you?"
"Nothing." Seeing Sylvia so agitated, Yvette quickly denied it, afraid she would cause trouble again. "She didn't say anything."
"What on earth is it? Is it because Wyatt showed up? Did he shake your resolve?" Sylvia thought seriously for a moment. "But Wyatt is indeed better than Albert. At least he likes you."
As Sylvia's words veered further off course, Yvette began to regret discussing this topic with her. She rubbed her forehead and said, "That's not it at all. I have even less connection with Wyatt; please don't jump to conclusions."
"Then why? You must have a reason for wanting a divorce."
Yvette felt a bit annoyed and said casually, "I just think getting married for the sake of a child isn't right."
Sylvia was extremely puzzled. "Why isn't it right?"
"I feel like I'm using the child to trap him." She was silent for a moment. "We don't really love each other."
Sylvia gave Yvette a disdainful look. "I thought it was something serious, but it's just this. Yvette, how did you become so irrational? Nowadays, most people wouldn't even decide to get married if it weren't for suddenly having a baby. So, it's very normal for you to get married because of a child. Besides, why didn't you think this through before getting married? You didn't consider it then, and now that you're married, you think you shouldn't have gotten married for the child. Aren't you just making trouble for yourself?"
Hearing Sylvia say this, Yvette felt a pang of sadness. It was something she had always been reluctant to bring up, a shameful stain in her life. She pretended this issue didn't exist, but everyone around her kept bringing it up. Her mom, Sylvia... everyone seemed to be reminding her that she had made a mistake. She had trapped a man with a child. It was embarrassing.
She bit her lip secretly and didn't continue the topic. "I was just saying it casually."
"You can't say such things casually," Sylvia reprimanded.
"Got it."
Yvette nodded and fell silent.
Seeing Yvette's low spirits, Sylvia tentatively asked, "Tomorrow's the weekend. How about we go shopping together?"
Yvette shook her head. "Albert is meeting my mom for dinner tomorrow."
Sylvia's expression immediately relaxed. "With Albert's personality, since he said he would take responsibility, he will. So, you can rest assured. He's willing to meet your family and go through these formalities, which means he's accommodating you."
"Yeah."
"You see, everything is moving in a good direction. Stop overthinking." Sylvia thought for a moment and said, "Before you got together with him, you knew he had someone in his heart. So don't dwell on the past. Think more about the future. Think about your baby."
Yvette smiled. "I know."
Lassie, although she said she didn't want to meet Albert, her actions showed how much she cared about this meeting.
She had been muttering to herself since she got up in the morning as if the daily chores gave her a sense of urgency. By three in the afternoon, she had not even taken her nap and had started trying on different clothes in Yvette's room.
Adjusting the collar of her gray coat, she looked in the mirror and said, "You have to reimburse me for this outfit. I bought it just to meet your husband. I bought new clothes for your sake."
Yvette, feeling annoyed, responded perfunctorily. "Okay."
Lassie turned to look at Yvette. "What about you? What are you wearing? It's late, and you haven't even put on makeup? Just because you're pregnant doesn't mean you can neglect your appearance. Men are visual creatures. It's already not good that you don't live together after getting pregnant. If you become sloppy, your marriage will be even more worrying."
Yvette lacked interest and didn't really listen to her words. She remained confused about tonight's meeting.
Seeing Yvette not responding, Lassie frowned, her tone a bit impatient. "What do his parents do for a living? Tell me in advance so I can prepare and avoid saying the wrong thing."
"His parents aren't coming."
"What? His parents aren't coming?" Lassie immediately turned around, staring at Yvette seriously. "What does that mean? Isn't it supposed to be a meeting between the two families? Why aren't his parents coming?"
Yvette didn't know much about Albert's family. She felt a pang of bitterness. She bit her lip. "His parents are abroad."
"Even so, they should come back for the meeting. Isn't their son's marriage and child important?"
Yvette lowered her head, constantly searching for excuses. She felt numb. "He doesn't have a good relationship with his family."
She paused for a few seconds. "Let's leave it at that. Don't make too many demands. Given our relationship, I can't ask too much of him."
"Yvette, what do you mean by that? Did you have a fight? Do we still need to meet?"
Yvette felt more and more annoyed as she spoke. She got up from the bed. "We didn't fight. I've just been in a bad mood lately, feeling irritable. Don't mind me. It's almost time. Hurry up and get dressed. The place is quite far."
Hearing Yvette say this, Lassie felt a bit relieved. She frowned and said earnestly, "Don't be so capricious with your husband. Albert won't understand your early pregnancy mood swings; he'll just think you're being unreasonable."
"Yeah."
The family drove for over an hour to the restaurant Albert had reserved.
It was a private dining restaurant with a great environment, built by the lake. The restaurant had an elegant and tasteful ambiance.
As soon as Yvette parked, her nephew was already attracted by the ducks playing by the lake. He opened the car door and ran off. Lassie, Wayne, and Zora had to get out of the car to chase the child.
Yvette followed the waiter to check-in.
The 20-foot-high foyer and classic décor were a testament to the owner's taste, and Yvette looked around with a small sense of relief.
At least Albert took this meeting seriously and gave her family enough respect.
As the waiter was looking for Yvette's reservation, she heard a hearty and familiar laugh behind her.
"Albert made a reservation? Why didn't he tell me? Where is he?"
Hearing Albert's name, Yvette instinctively turned around. The next moment, she saw a familiar figure striding into her view.
