Chapter 538 I Miss You—Stay With Me Tonight
When Yvette slowly stirred awake, she caught fragments of conversation drifting through the door.
Struggling to sit up, she realized she'd slept deeply—deeper than she had in ages. Whatever medication Doyle had given her had worked wonders; she felt remarkably refreshed.
The room lay shrouded in darkness, heavy curtains blocking out any natural light. Only a thin beam from the hallway slipped beneath the door, cutting through the shadows. Along with the light came voices, filtering through the gap.
"Her condition is more complicated than I initially thought. I'll need to examine her again shortly to determine if my treatment approach is on track." Doyle's voice carried a serious undertone. "What have you discovered on your end?"
"My people have been monitoring the Hayes family and Violet around the clock, but strangely enough, they've gone completely quiet." Albert's voice held a note of frustration. "There has to be some kind of deal brewing between them."
"Didn't you say they were pushing aggressively before? Why would they suddenly back off the moment Yvette returns?"
"I can't be certain, but I've doubled our surveillance. The second either party makes a move, we'll know about it."
"Good. The sooner we get answers, the better it might help with her diagnosis."
"Understood." Albert paused before asking, "Will she be able to come home tonight?"
"Why are you so eager to get her out of here?"
"The children were just brought back, and they're already asking for her again." Albert exhaled slowly. "She's been away too long—they're feeling insecure."
Doyle's voice turned sardonic. "I think you're the one who misses her most. You'd probably attach yourself to her hip if you could."
Yvette expected Albert to deny it, but instead heard only a soft chuckle—a quiet admission that made her lips curve into an involuntary smile.
"Alright, alright!" Doyle's voice grew exasperated. "Take her home then. You've got all the necessary equipment there anyway. Just monitor her closely and call me immediately if anything changes."
"Of course. We have a family physician on standby twenty-four seven."
The moment their conversation ended, the door swung open. Light flooded the room, causing Yvette to squint reflexively. She hadn't expected Albert to enter so suddenly—there was no time to pretend she was still asleep.
Catching her slightly embarrassed expression, Albert's eyes glinted with amusement. "Heard everything, did you?"
"Yes." Yvette abandoned any pretense and nodded. "Dr. Cunningham said I can go home to sleep?"
Albert approached the bed and settled beside her, gently drawing her upright form into his arms so she could lean against him comfortably. "That's right. BoBo and CiCi said they missed you again."
Yvette nestled naturally against him, not turning around as she asked softly, "Didn't Dr. Cunningham say you were the one who missed me?"
Albert's body tensed slightly, hardly daring to believe how dramatically Yvette's attitude toward him had shifted. Sensing his silence, Yvette changed the subject. "Then you can take me home later. I'll sleep with the children tonight."
"Absolutely not." Albert tightened his hold around her slender waist, burying his face in the curve of her neck as his voice came out muffled. "I'm the one who missed you. Tonight, you sleep with me."
A blush crept across Yvette's cheeks. "Alright."
The children's joy at Yvette's unexpected return was boundless—they immediately rushed to her side.
CiCi wrapped her arms tightly around Yvette's legs, tilting her face up with a radiant smile as she chanted, "Mommy, you're home! Mommy!"
Both children hovered around Yvette, chattering excitedly about her health.
CiCi asked hopefully, "Mommy, did Mr. Cunningham let you come home because you're feeling better?"
"Mommy can walk by herself now, so of course she's better!" BoBo's eyes sparkled with happiness. "Mommy, CiCi and I have been waiting for you to come back!"
Watching her children, Yvette felt overwhelmed with tenderness and joy. What should have been ordinary family moments now felt precious beyond measure after everything they'd been through.
Yvette knelt down and gathered both BoBo and CiCi into her embrace, kissing their cheeks as she said gently, "I'm much better now. When I heard you missed me, I had to come home."
Witnessing this scene, Albert's typically stern features softened considerably. He helped Yvette to the sofa, his eyes reflecting both concern and affection. "Sit down and rest."
Once Yvette settled on the sofa, BoBo and CiCi immediately climbed up beside her, refusing to let go. Watching the two children cling to Yvette, Albert found himself envying their position.
Yvette glanced at the time. "It's getting late. Have you both had your baths?"
"Yes!" BoBo's face fell slightly. "Mommy, are you going to make us go to bed now?"
CiCi's mood instantly mirrored her brother's, her lower lip trembling. "Mommy, we want you to sleep with us."
Yvette opened her mouth to respond, but Albert spoke first, his patience wearing thin. "No."
Both children froze, turning to stare at Albert in confusion.
A flicker of discomfort crossed Albert's eyes as he cleared his throat. "Your mommy isn't completely well yet. Sleeping with you two would disturb her rest."
In the end, Yvette couldn't resist the children's pleading looks. Lying in their bed, she gently patted their backs, coaxing them to sleep. Despite their obvious excitement, Albert's words seemed to have made an impression—both children remained quiet, holding Yvette tightly with their eyes squeezed shut, determined to fall asleep quickly so they wouldn't disturb her rest.
Gazing at their peaceful sleeping faces, Yvette smiled with contentment, stroking their soft cheeks. Once they were deeply asleep, she had planned to stay in the children's room, but remembering Albert's rather pitiful expression, she reconsidered.
With that thought, Yvette carefully rose and tiptoed out of the room. When she pushed open the master bedroom door, Albert was propped against the headboard reading, completely absorbed in his book.
At the sound of the door, he looked up to meet Yvette's smiling eyes. Albert froze, surprise and anticipation flickering in his dark gaze. "Why are you back?"
Yvette raised an eyebrow with playful challenge. "What? Am I not welcome?"
Their eyes locked as Albert pressed his lips together, suddenly setting aside his book.
Without bothering to put on his shoes, he strode directly to Yvette and swept her up in his arms. "More than welcome. I thought you weren't coming back to our room tonight."
