Chapter 268 Your Pretense as Yvette Caught My Eye
Memories came rushing back, and he could even picture Yvette's face when she said those words.
For years, it felt like an invisible lock had sealed away his memories. When that lock finally broke, the flood of images made his head throb like crazy.
But the headache was nothing compared to the ache in his heart.
The memories of him and Yvette were so precious, their time together so amazing, yet he had completely forgotten them!
Turned out, Yvette never liked David from the start; she was always there for him.
But what about him?
How had he treated Yvette all these years?
He had treated her like some obedient mistress.
He was a total jerk!
Albert suddenly slammed his head against the steering wheel, filled with despair and regret.
Always calm and composed, he now looked like a wounded animal, curled up in the wrecked car, even forgetting to save himself.
Outside, Vincent was frantically pounding on the car window, scared that Albert might pass out again.
"Mr. Valdemar!" Vincent shouted urgently. "The car's flipped over and is seriously damaged; it could blow up any second. Can you hear me? It's super dangerous; you gotta get out now! Mr. Valdemar!"
Despite Vincent's loud voice piercing through the window, Albert seemed oblivious, lost in his memories, unable to move.
Facing his amnesia, those cold words, those heartless turns, what was Yvette feeling? If roles were reversed, he would have left long ago, wouldn't he? Yet, she foolishly waited for his memory to return.
He suddenly recalled the "first" time he met Yvette, the deep emotions in her eyes, and how she trembled but didn't back down when he undressed her.
She had been waiting for him to remember everything every moment.
But what had he done?
He never hesitated to assume the worst about her, accusing her of being with him for money, for the greedy Lassie, for the Valdemar family's wealth.
How disappointed must Yvette have been in him?
So disappointed that every time he misunderstood and hurt her, she didn't even want to explain, just silently let him vent his emotions.
Regret, guilt, and pain tightly gripped Albert's throat, making it hard for him to breathe.
He was a bastard, inflicting the cruelest wounds on the person who loved him most all these years.
Outside, Vincent, who was trying to rescue him, seemed to have dug somewhere, causing the car to jolt suddenly.
Albert's head hit again, making his headache worse, but it brought back his consciousness, and he gradually became clear-headed.
He owed Yvette too much; he had to find her, even if it cost him his life!
"Mr. Valdemar!" Vincent anxiously smashed open the back seat window. "Mr. Valdemar, Mrs. Valdemar hasn't been found yet; you can't fall!"
Vincent's words were like a bucket of cold water pouring down, snapping him back to reality.
Yvette's life was uncertain now; he had to find her quickly!
Albert's expression instantly became serious, his bloodshot eyes filled with determination. He looked around to assess his situation and find a way to escape.
The car had deformed from rolling over several times, but luckily, Albert's body wasn't crushed. He took the tool Vincent handed him, cut the seatbelt, and struggled to climb out through the broken window.
Vincent was freaking out. "Mr. Valdemar, are you okay? The ambulance is just up ahead."
Albert's eyes were bloodshot. "I'm fine, just some minor injuries."
"Mr. Valdemar."
Albert's voice cut through the air. "Everyone, go find Yvette!"
After searching all night, they finally found a clue on a bridge. But the trail went cold there.
As the morning sun rose, Albert stood on the bridge, staring at the rushing river below, on the verge of breaking down.
The clue ended here, leaving only two possibilities: Yvette either jumped into the river or was taken away, putting her in serious danger.
Vincent looked at Albert's pale face and bloodshot eyes, worried. The car accident had left him with various injuries, but he didn't seem to care.
"Mr. Valdemar, let's keep searching. You should go to the hospital, okay?"
"No, keep searching!"
So many people had searched for so long without any news; continuing might put Albert in danger too. Vincent braced himself and said, "Mr. Valdemar, you need rest and treatment for your wounds. Everyone is waiting for your decision; you can't fall."
Albert instinctively wanted to be strong, but his reason told him Vincent was right.
Albert frowned. "Where's Violet?"
Vincent answered, "At the hospital."
"To the hospital."
Violet lay in the hospital bed, her face wrapped in bandages, the only exposed eye swollen. If it weren't for the name tag on the bed reading Violet, Albert would hardly recognize her.
Violet slowly opened her eyes, and upon seeing Albert, she was overjoyed. "Albert? You came to see me?"
Violet's voice was muffled, and Albert's expression was grim.
Violet was frightened by the cold light in his eyes and asked timidly, "Albert?"
Albert's eyes were full of disgust as he directly asked, "Did Yvette say anything to you before she left?"
Violet was stunned and turned her head, not answering.
Seeing her silence, Albert's anger surged, and he asked sternly again, "I'm asking you! What did Yvette say to you before she left?"
Albert's cold and disdainful words deeply hurt Violet, making her already painful situation even more desperate.
Violet accused bitterly, "You came just to ask me this? I've been hurt like this, and you don't feel any pity? We've had so many years together, and you're this cold! Do you only care about who you slept with? Do our years together mean nothing to you?"
Hearing her mention "many years," Albert's already stern expression turned angrier.
If it weren't for Violet taking Yvette's necklace and lying that she was the girl from the countryside, how could he have hurt Yvette so deeply?
He had asked countless times about the firefly necklace, and Violet had repeatedly claimed that identity.
Violet's continuous deception had made him give all the emotions and care meant for Yvette to her!
Because of her lies, Yvette had only seen his coldness and hurt.
"Violet, you should know best that I was good to you because I thought you were the girl from my childhood."
Violet's eyes widened. "But we've been together for so long! How could it just be because of childhood?"
"My heart was moved only once," Albert said word by word. "And that person is Yvette. If it weren't for you pretending to be her, I wouldn't have noticed you at all."
