Chapter 173 Lassie Needed Surgery
Outside the emergency room.
Yvette signed the papers and stood at the door, trying to keep it together. Her hands were clenched so tight her nails were digging into her palms.
She wasn't scared, just kind of out of it, not really getting why everything had gone sideways so fast.
There was a commotion, and Yvette turned around, feeling numb. Wayne came running over, with Zora trailing behind, holding a sleeping Kyle.
Wayne rushed up to Yvette. "Where's Mom?"
Yvette raised her hand, feeling completely drained. "She's inside, being resuscitated."
"What happened?" Wayne's eyes welled up. "She said she was going out to find someone. How did she end up in a car accident? How is she?"
Yvette stayed emotionless, just repeating what the doctor had told her, "The doctor said she ran a red light on her bike and almost hit a truck. She got scared, fell, and hit her head, causing a brain hemorrhage."
Yvette's eyes darkened with a scary intensity.
Her emotions were all over the place. She'd been furious when she heard Lassie had gone to find Violet again and was on her way to bring Lassie home. But then she got a call from the hospital saying Lassie was in critical condition.
Zora looked anxiously at Yvette, babbling, "Yvette, I told Mom so many times to follow traffic rules when riding a bike and to wear a helmet..."
Wayne's emotions flared up even more, snarling, "Mom's already in the emergency room, and you're talking about this now? Just take care of Kyle. This has nothing to do with you!"
Zora, feeling both angry and hurt, glared at Wayne and sat down with Kyle.
Yvette sighed, "The doctor said the location of Mom's brain hemorrhage is tricky, making surgery difficult. So, they can only try conservative treatment for now."
Wayne, not understanding, shouted, "Why can't they do surgery? If there's a problem, they should operate!"
"Wayne, calm down," Yvette explained, "The location of the hemorrhage requires a highly skilled surgeon."
Just then, the doctor came out of the emergency room, calling out, "Is Lassie's family here?"
Yvette and Wayne immediately stepped forward. "Here! How's our mom?"
"The bleeding has been temporarily stopped, but her condition is still critical. The location of the hemorrhage is tricky, so we need a senior specialist for the surgery. Otherwise, a hasty operation could be fatal," the doctor said, "We'll transfer her to the ICU for observation. You should think about the next steps and prepare the money if you want to continue treatment."
Yvette finally felt the gravity of the situation and tried to stay calm. "We'll find a way to get the money. Doctor, can Center Hospital perform the surgery?"
"Center Hospital?" The doctor thought for a moment, saying, "It might be difficult. If you have connections, you could try to get Dr. Martinez. He would be more reliable."
Yvette was stunned. Willard Martinez was a top international neurosurgeon, indicating that Lassie's condition was indeed severe.
Taking a deep breath, Yvette replied, "Thank you, doctor. I understand."
As soon as the doctor left, Wayne grabbed Yvette. "Yvette, how much would it cost to get Dr. Martinez? Aren't you a doctor? Can't you ask your renowned professor to help?"
Yvette swallowed hard, her body trembling. She shook her head in despair. "Wayne, prepare yourself mentally. I'll do my best to find a way."
Lassie was transferred to the ICU, and the family could only wait anxiously outside.
Wayne paced back and forth in front of Yvette, visibly agitated.
After several laps, he couldn't hold back and approached Yvette. "Yvette, the ICU is expensive. Can't you find a way to get the surgery done first?"
Yvette frowned at Wayne. "When you were in the ICU, did Mom ever complain about the cost?"
"That's not what I mean!" Wayne said irritably, "I'm saying that staying in the ICU won't help her condition. We need to find a way to get the surgery done! You have so many teachers, classmates, and colleagues. Use any connections you have!"
Yvette finally lost her patience and stood up, snarling, "I'm trying to find a way. Stop yelling!"
Wayne, about to lose his temper, was stopped by Zora. "Yvette is under a lot of pressure. Let her think clearly. If you can't help, don't make it worse!"
Wayne, who had health issues, was always taken care of by Zora, who also looked after Kyle. So he listened to her. He glared at Yvette, swallowed his words, and sat down.
Yvette, feeling overwhelmed, sat on a hospital bench, clutching her phone. After a long moment, she finally called Wyatt.
Wyatt quickly answered, "Yvette?"
"I need to ask you something." Yvette bit her lip. "Do you have any way to contact Dr. Martinez?"
"Dr. Martinez? I don't have that connection." Wyatt sensed something was wrong in Yvette's voice. "What's going on?"
"It's just that my family needs Dr. Martinez for a surgery."
"Surgery? You need Dr. Martinez? That serious?" Wyatt's tone became serious. "I really can't help. Have you tried asking Mr. Wilson?"
Yvette gave a bitter smile. "I turned down Center Hospital last time. Mr. Wilson might be angry with me. I don't know if he's still mad."
Wyatt thought for a moment. "Let me ask for you."
After Wyatt hung up, Yvette placed her hands on her lap, waiting anxiously for his call back.
Every minute of waiting felt like an eternity for Yvette.
Lassie was still in the ICU, awaiting further treatment. If Willard couldn't help with the surgery, she would have to find another specialist, which would be incredibly risky.
Yvette covered her face with her hands, feeling utterly helpless. She desperately hoped someone could help her.
Wyatt's call came back quickly, and Yvette answered with a tight throat.
Wyatt said, "I asked Mr. Wilson. He said Dr. Martinez is hard to reach. Who in your family needs Dr. Martinez for surgery?"
Yvette's heart sank, and despair filled her. She closed her eyes, and when she spoke again, her voice was choked with tears, "It's my mom."
"Your mom?" Wyatt said in surprise. After a moment, he spoke again, "Yvette, if it's your mom who needs the surgery, do you want to try my suggestion?"
A glimmer of hope sparked in Yvette. "What suggestion?"
He answered, "Go find Albert."
