Chapter 206 Yvette's Dilemma
Yvette's face was totally calm, her voice flat. "There's no threat, Sylvia. You know about ALS, right? A single dose of the special medication costs over $200,000. With my mom's condition, she needs at least three to five doses in the first year, and three doses every year after that, for life."
Sylvia, who had been indignant, instantly composed herself, her eyes now filled with worry and compassion for Yvette.
"Yvette..." Sylvia hesitated, "But we don't even know how long the medication will work. Are you really going to sacrifice your whole life for this? Can't you hold on a bit longer and seek help when there's no other way?"
"I have no other way." Yvette's voice stayed emotionless, like she wasn't even talking about her own situation. "Over the years, I've saved very little because of Wayne's illness. This time, my mom had a car accident, and my savings are gone. Not to mention the future costs for ALS treatment. So this is the best choice."
Outside, the rain gently tapped against the window, making a soft sound. Yvette calmly laid out her plan.
Sylvia looked at Yvette with concern. She was always expressive with her emotions, so she stood up and gave Yvette a hug. She gently patted Yvette's back, her fingers lightly stroking through the thin fabric.
Yvette was moved by the comforting hug, her nose tingling as she whispered, "Thank you."
Sylvia sighed, sat down, and asked, "But why don't you go directly to Albert? Since he inherited his grandfather's estate, he can easily afford Lassie's treatment."
"He said he wouldn't give me any more cents," Yvette tugged at the corner of her mouth. "In his eyes, whether we stay married or not, it's all about the money for me."
After saying this, she seemed stunned by her own words, then gave a bitter laugh. "No, I should say, I did do it for the money"
"Since he already thinks you're in it for the money, why not be shameless and just ask him for it?" Sylvia showed an unreasonable expression.
"He won't give," Yvette said firmly. "Why humiliate myself?"
"But can't you just tell him the truth? Lassie's illness is real, and you really need the money. Even if he resents you, he wouldn't just let Lassie die, would he?"
"Sylvia." Yvette looked directly into Sylvia's eyes. "My mom had such a severe accident and she needed brain surgery. He could have easily found someone to perform the surgery, but he chose to do nothing. And he hasn't even visited once."
Yvette clenched her hands, holding back her emotions. "He hates me so much that he ignores my mom's life. How can I ask him for help? It's not about hearing the words, but about seeing his actions. I should know my place, right?"
Sylvia's throat tightened. "But can his father really want to help you?"
"I don't care if he really wants to help me," Yvette said each word firmly. "As long as he can give me the money, moving into the Valdemar Villa isn't that hard. He wants me to have Albert's child, but Albert is someone he can't control. As long as Albert doesn't come back, it's not my fault."
Yvette sighed. "Let's just put things on hold for now."
North Airlines.
Albert stepped out of the manager's office, and Steve, who had been waiting outside, walked up to him.
"Mr. Valdemar, did you really give away all your shifts this week?" Steve asked, curious. "Are you heading back to the Valdemar Villa to take over the business?"
Albert shot him a glance but didn't say anything. Victor, who had just come out from the next office, joined in on the conversation.
Victor chuckled. "Of course, who wouldn't want to go home to a billion-dollar inheritance? Albert's going from a cold and aloof captain to a CEO."
Albert ignored Victor and turned to Steve. "Have you logged 3,000 minutes yet?"
Steve nodded. "Yeah, I have."
"I've signed you up for the selection training," Albert said, patting Steve's shoulder. "Train hard and do well."
Victor chimed in, "Looks like Mr. Valdemar is setting you up for a promotion, from co-pilot to captain. Not bad, huh?"
"Not bad at all," Steve said, standing a bit taller. "I've learned a lot from him. I really have to thank him."
"This recommendation is also crucial," Victor reminded.
"Yeah." Steve looked gratefully at Albert. "Thanks for the support, Mr. Valdemar."
Albert checked his watch, responding casually, "I have something to do, gotta go."
As he was about to leave, Victor quickly called out, "Almost forgot to tell you—I saw Sylvia at the front desk. She's here to see you. You should go and check."
Albert paused, frowning instinctively. Victor raised an eyebrow. "Maybe Yvette wants to reconcile and sent her friend to test your attitude."
Albert looked straight ahead, as if he didn't see Sylvia, and walked past her. Sylvia immediately got off the couch and hurried after Albert. "Albert, I need to talk to you. Are you busy?"
"What is it?" Albert, knowing full well what time it was, still checked his watch. "You have ten minutes. Is that enough?"
"It's enough!"
Albert led Sylvia to his office. He sat on the guest sofa and remained silent, his expression indifferent.
After a while, Sylvia still hadn't spoken. Albert pursed his lips, asking, "What do you need?"
"Albert, I'm here as Yvette's friend today," Sylvia said seriously, completely different from her usual carefree self. "I'm not interfering in your marriage, but Yvette is really struggling right now."
Albert sneered, "She's turely struggling, but for the money."
Seeing Albert's cold attitude, Sylvia finally understood why Yvette didn't go to him but went to James instead. She felt a bit irritated. "She wants money for a reason. You should know about the major accident Lassie had. All her savings are gone. Now Lassie has been diagnosed with ALS and needs expensive treatment. If she doesn't find a way to get money, it's like condemning her own mother to die."
Albert's eyebrows twitched, his fingers lightly rubbing together, deep in thought.
