Chapter 255 Is the Baby a Turning Point?
On the way back, Yvette was mentally rehearsing her conversation with Albert when Sylvia called.
"Yvette, where'd you just go?"
Yvette was puzzled. "What's up?"
Sylvia's teasing voice came through the phone. "Come on, spill it. Did you go somewhere?"
Yvette said, "What do you mean? Where did I go?"
"If you want me to be blunt, did you just go to the hospital? My friend said she saw you at the OB-GYN department of her hospital." Sylvia laughed. "You can't still be going for a follow-up after all this time, can you?"
So it was an old classmate who saw her. She had specifically chosen an unfamiliar private hospital for the check-up.
Yvette instinctively rubbed her bag a few times, leaving faint marks with her fingers.
Yvette thought for a moment. "Yeah, I went for a check-up."
"Found out you're pregnant, right?"
"Yep."
Sylvia said, "Albert's sperm quality is really high. If the last child had been born, at this rate, you'd be having one every year."
"He doesn't even like kids." Yvette's brief happiness from being pregnant again was dampened by this issue. She started to feel anxious again. "It wasn't planned. I forgot to take my birth control."
"Why are you taking birth control? Are you guys planning to be child-free?"
Thinking of all the troublesome matters, Yvette stammered, "The timing isn't right yet."
"Don't overthink it," Sylvia said, "Being pregnant is the best timing. Besides, your relationship has been so up and down lately. Having a child may help stabilize your marriage."
Yvette lowered her gaze, her chest filled with a mix of joy and anxiety.
Could this child be a turning point for her and Albert?
Milton drove quickly, and soon they were back at the Valdemar Villa. Yvette entered the house but didn't see Albert.
Yvette found the maid who had called her. She was already preparing the afternoon dessert.
Yvette looked around and asked, "Is Mr. Valdemar back? Where did he go?"
The maid, knowing who Yvette was asking about, smiled and said, "He's upstairs. Said he has a meeting later and is preparing for it now."
"I see." Yvette feigned nonchalance in her response.
Yvette went upstairs and quietly pushed open the door, intending to wait until Albert finished his work to talk to him. But to her surprise, Albert was still in the room.
"Aren't you supposed to have a meeting?" Albert's voice was cold. "Waiting for you."
Waiting for her? A hint of joy flashed across Yvette's face.
"Do you need to talk to me?" she thought, 'Did he bring me a gift from his trip?'
"I do need to talk to you," Albert looked up at her. "But before that, I want to ask if there's something you've forgotten to tell me."
She did have something to tell him.
Thinking of the child and Cheryl's words, she felt that this was her chance.
Yvette didn't dare to look up, fearing that seeing Albert's expression would make her lose the courage she had just mustered.
She took a deep breath and spoke. "I do have something to tell you."
Albert's deep eyes looked at Yvette, hiding endless emotions. "Go ahead."
Yvette tightly gripped the strap of her bag, lowered her eyes, and said in one breath, "When I was 14, I met you, and since then, I've liked you. The reason I went to North Airlines was because..."
"Enough." Albert's low, cold voice cut Yvette off. "Get to the point and stop with the irrelevant stuff."
Yvette was stunned. When she looked up, she met Albert's cold, sharp gaze.
"Irrelevant?"
The more Yvette talked, the more disgusted Albert felt, his aura growing more menacing by the second.
"Yvette, don't you find these words disgusting?" Albert's lips curled into a cold smile. "You may not, but I do."
"What do you mean?" Yvette momentarily doubted if she had heard him right.
Albert's fierce eyes were covered with a layer of cold frost. "Of course, you wouldn't fall for another man. After all, you and James have already plotted to take my assets. The inheritance I get during our marriage, you get half of it. Your ambition is quite something."
The words she had on the tip of her tongue seemed to freeze in the air, leaving Yvette's mind a blank slate, her rationale slipping away.
Yvette instinctively shook her head, urgently explaining, "No, it's not like that."
Despite her eagerness to explain, her mind went blank. Caught in Albert's scornful gaze, she found herself unable to utter a single word.
The agreement did indeed divide Albert's assets, leaving her with no defense.
Seeing that she couldn't refute, Albert sneered, took out the original agreement, and threw it in Yvette's face. "Then what?"
Albert's gaze was cold and guarded, his eyes sharp as blades.
Yvette clenched her hands, forcing herself to calm down. "That's true. I did sign that agreement without fully understanding it. But after some research, I realized that as long as we're married, I can ensure the protection of your assets. Your controlling interest won't be affected. I have something to show you. Once you see it, you'll believe my words."
Then Yvette reached for the check-up results in her bag.
She aimed to demonstrate to Albert her sincere commitment to remaining at Valdemar Villa, raising his child, and preventing James from laying claim to half of the assets.
But the next second, Albert had already grabbed her wrist.
Yvette's gaze was forced to meet his, seeing only a cold, dark light in his eyes.
"Yvette, you really don't lose out." Albert's eyes narrowed. "If I'm willing to live peacefully with you, you stay with me. If not, you cooperate with James to secure your place in the Valdemar family. With a child, if I die, all the assets are yours. Is that it? You are truly greedy and shameless!"
Witnessing Albert's intense animosity, Yvette's hands began to tremble, yet she persisted, "That's not how it is."
"I said we could stay married. But I also made it clear that you shouldn't expect to get any of my assets." Albert's cold eyes emitted a dangerous aura. "And having a child won't change a thing for you."
Albert sternly warned, "Take your birth control pills on time. If you dare to get pregnant on purpose, I'll personally take you for an abortion."
Yvette felt a chill down her back and instinctively covered her bag.
Albert casually flung Yvette's hand away, as if he had touched something dirty, and wiped his hand in disgust.
He looked at her with contempt. "What do you want to show me?"
Yvette was flustered but tried to stay calm. "Since you said that, what's the point of showing you anything?"
He sneered. "Good that you understand."
