Chapter 621 Clifford's Hidden Medicine
Clifford had never imagined a day when his parents would humble themselves before him like this.
Witnessing the scene unfolding before him, Clifford's eyes widened in shock, his body rigid with a mixture of disbelief and heartbreak.
These were the people who had given him unconditional love and support throughout his life, yet here they were, pleading with him.
"Clifford, we're begging you—please don't provoke her anymore." Felix's voice was hoarse and heavy, each word laden with desperate entreaty.
Gabrielle trembled, tears glistening in her eyes as she spoke with infinite sadness and supplication: "We just want you to live. You're our only son—we can't bear the thought of losing you."
Tears streamed down Gabrielle's face. Seeing Clifford frozen in place, she shuffled forward two steps and grasped his arm tightly.
She shook his arm gently, as if trying to pull him back from the edge of danger.
Clifford's shoulders sagged, and his entire body began to tremble.
They had always been his pillars of strength, his role models and refuge. But now, they stood before him in such vulnerability.
"Mom, Dad, please get up. Don't do this." Clifford's voice wavered, barely steady.
Felix and Gabrielle shook their heads, their eyes resolute and unwavering.
They seemed to have made their decision—for his protection, they would sacrifice anything.
"Clifford, I know you don't want to see us forcing you like this. But please trust us—everything we do is for your own good." Gabrielle sobbed as she continued: "Stop antagonizing Violet for Yvette's sake. We want you alive! Please, won't you listen?"
Felix's voice was equally ragged, "You always blame us for treating her poorly, but what parent doesn't want their child to survive above all else?"
Clifford's chest rose and fell rapidly, but he couldn't find words to argue.
He knew that even if Felix and Gabrielle were wrong, from their perspective, wanting him to live and be healthy was any parent's greatest wish.
Yet Clifford's heart questioned why they had to harm someone else's child for his sake.
If they hadn't kept Yvette locked away, even using her for drug trials, he wouldn't feel such crushing guilt toward her.
He wanted to make amends to Yvette, to help restore her health. Was that so wrong?
Clifford exhaled deeply. He had so much he wanted to say in rebuttal, but seeing Felix and Gabrielle's pleading expressions, he opened his mouth only to find himself speechless.
Gabrielle's hand gripped Clifford's tightly. "Clifford, why can't you understand our intentions? We only want you to live well."
Clifford lowered his gaze, his throat tight with emotion.
After what felt like an eternity, when Felix and Gabrielle were beginning to despair, Clifford finally spoke.
His voice was terrifyingly hoarse, as if he were making an impossibly difficult decision.
Clifford took a deep breath, "Mom, Dad, I understand. Don't worry—I'll take my medication properly and won't seek out Ms. Swift anymore."
Clifford's words made Felix and Gabrielle's eyes light up. "Thank goodness, Clifford! You've finally come to your senses!"
Clifford couldn't bear to make things harder for Felix and Gabrielle, didn't want them approaching Violet on his behalf anymore, and couldn't stand seeing them worry. He could only agree for now.
"Don't worry about me anymore." Clifford's voice was low and soothing: "I won't put you in difficult positions again."
"That's wonderful!" Gabrielle held Clifford tightly, tears of relief streaming down her face as she clung to him, as if she had waited far too long for this moment.
Felix's face broke into a relieved smile, his eyes moist as he gently stroked Clifford's back, seeming to channel all his support and encouragement through the touch.
Clifford managed a weak smile.
He lifted his hands to rub Felix and Gabrielle's backs gently, soothing their emotions. "I'm a bit tired. Could I rest for a while?"
"Of course!" Felix nodded eagerly.
"But take your medicine first, Clifford! Take it before you rest!" Gabrielle insisted.
Clifford's brow furrowed, displeasure flickering across his features.
Gabrielle immediately noticed his expression and quickly backtracked, "I don't mean to pressure you, I just—"
"It's alright, Mom. I'll take it." Clifford said wearily: "I'd like to sleep first, if that's okay?"
Gabrielle wanted to persist, but Felix had already taken hold of her arm.
"Enough. Clifford has already given us his word—stop pressuring him." Felix looked at Clifford and said gently, "It's fine, Clifford. I'll take your mother away so you can rest. I trust that when you make a promise, you won't go back on it. You'll take your medication properly."
With that, Felix guided Gabrielle out of Clifford's room.
The moment Felix and Gabrielle left, tranquility returned to the room. The door closed softly, the sound fading into the empty hallway.
The sudden quiet was broken only by the gentle breeze outside the window, like soft piano notes drifting through the air.
Clifford slowly sank into the sofa, his face etched with exhaustion, his deep eyes holding a trace of bewilderment and contemplation.
His gaze fixed on something in the distance, though his thoughts wandered far beyond.
For so long, his singular goal had been finding a way to help Yvette recover.
But now, he seemed to have hit a wall.
The air in the room felt thick and still, broken only by Clifford's breathing and occasional sounds from outside. He lost himself in thought, letting time slip away unnoticed.
His peripheral vision caught the medicine and water on the table, snapping him back to reality.
Perhaps there was still room to maneuver.
As long as no one knew.
Clifford's eyes suddenly filled with determination and resolve.
He stood up and carefully divided the full dose of medication in half, swallowing one portion.
The other half he wrapped carefully in tissue and hid in his locked bedside drawer.
Though the action was simple, Clifford's back was damp with sweat when he finished.
Clifford walked to the window, gazing out at the night scene as he steeled his resolve.
If he could save some medication for Yvette, couldn't they both have access to the treatment?
If it just meant recovering more slowly, that wouldn't affect him at all.
Since Felix, Gabrielle, and Violet wouldn't allow him to do this openly, he would do it in secret, ensuring no one discovered his plan.
