Chapter 241 David's Persuasion

Vincent was taken aback and didn't dare to say a word.

In bed, Yvette listened, her eyes cold with disappointment.

Vincent had been waiting outside for who knew how long, and he probably heard those humiliating words. He was the one who handed her the birth control pills, after all.

She remembered the slightly pitying look Vincent gave her. She smiled bitterly and buried her face in the pillow.

She knew Albert said those things to warn her.

After Albert left, the room fell silent again.

Yvette felt incredibly thirsty and finally dragged her tired body downstairs to get some water.

It was late, and the Valdemar family mansion was dimly lit.

She quietly poured herself a glass of water. Just as she was about to head back upstairs, she noticed someone on the sofa out of the corner of her eye.

Yvette was startled and looked closer, realizing it was David sitting there, staring at her.

"David? Why are you back too?" Yvette's voice was a bit hoarse, so she quickly took a sip of water to soothe her throat.

David's face was hidden in the shadows, and Yvette couldn't see his expression, but she could feel the heavy atmosphere around him.

David seemed lost in thought and only spoke after a long pause, "Do you want to come over and sit for a while?"

He scooted over a bit, making room for Yvette.

Yvette thought for a moment and then walked over to sit down.

They sat side by side on the sofa, with only a dim light in the corner of the living room illuminating them.

Even though David could only see Yvette's silhouette in the dim light, he knew what had just happened.

David's Adam's apple moved slightly as he turned to look at Yvette and asked, "Yvette, are you unhappy in the Valdemar family?"

Yvette's expression remained stoic as she took a sip of water and murmured, "It's not about happiness. I'm Albert's wife, and being here is expected."

"I'm not asking if you should live here," David's voice unconsciously grew louder. "I'm asking if you're happy."

Yvette hesitated, wanting to reassure him that she was fine.

But the words eluded her.

In that brief silence, the two exchanged a knowing glance in the dim light.

"I've told you before, if you ever need help and are willing to come to me, I'll find a way to help you," David paused, hinting and saying, "including your marriage and your place to live."

In the past, Yvette would have deeply appreciated David's offer and unquestioningly believed in his support.

However, her current predicament involved considerations tied to her pact with James, a complexity she couldn't divulge. It wasn't a lack of trust in David; she simply aimed to safeguard her interests more effectively.

Yvette shook her head, replying, "I don't need any help for now, thank you, David."

Yvette's guardedness extinguished the last glimmer of light in David's eyes.

David stared at Yvette for a long time before finally nodding.

His voice had returned to normal, becoming calm and gentle, "I got it. When you need help, remember to come to me first."

"Okay," Yvette replied with a grateful smile.

The next afternoon, after getting a call from James, Albert and David met up in the study of the Valdemar family mansion.

Once the meeting wrapped up, James left first, leaving David to tidy up the remaining documents.

Albert finished his work call and was about to leave the study when David stopped him.

"Albert." David's expression was serious as he blocked Albert's path. "We need to talk."

Albert frowned, looking at David impatiently. "There's nothing to talk about between us."

"There is—it's about Yvette," David said, fixing his gaze on him. "You chose to marry Yvette, yet you treat her like this. You don't deserve her."

Albert's eyes instantly turned cold as he defensively stared at David. "My worthiness is not for you to judge."

"Why don't you take a look? She has no friends and no family of her own in the Valdemar family. She doesn't belong here," David's forehead veins slightly bulged. He stated angrily, "If you're not willing to treat her well, then let her go."

"Let her go?" Albert sneered. "And then what? Let her be with you?"

"Yes," David's eyes were firm. "I'll take her where she feels at ease and provide the life she desires. Not with you, in this place that brings her sorrow."

Unease flickered across Albert's face, his hands clenching into fists as his aura grew heavier while he retorted, "You want to take her away from the Valdemar family?"

David replied, "Yes."

"But if you leave the Valdemar family, all your efforts over the years will be in vain." Albert leaned in slightly, exuding a strong sense of oppression. "You want both the Valdemar family and Yvette, don't you?"

Before David could respond, Albert curled his lips in disdain, his eyes and brows filled with contempt. He sneered, "What a pity, whether it's the Valdemar family or Yvette, unless I decide otherwise, you won't have a chance with either. Do you understand?"

David's chest heaved slightly, as if suppressing something. His eyes turned a thin layer of red, and his gaze grew colder.

Albert's gaze was too sharp, and David turned his head, ending the stare-down.

Finding it uninteresting, Albert sneered and turned to leave the study.

Leaving the study, Albert walked into the elevator with a cold face. Although he scoffed at David's words, they kept replaying in his mind.

The elevator slowly stopped on the first floor. Albert strode out and was about to leave when he caught a glimpse of the dining room out of the corner of his eye.

Yvette was eating.

Albert paused and involuntarily walked over.

The large dining table, which could seat more than twenty people, now had only Yvette sitting at the end.

She sat alone at the end of the table, head down, silently eating the food in front of her.

The food was plentiful, and the Valdemar family's meals were undoubtedly good. But Yvette ate very slowly, as if she lacked any appetite.

Albert's brow furrowed slightly, and he turned his head away, his deep eyes filled with intense emotions that contrasted sharply with his calm expression.

At that moment, Albert suddenly understood David's earlier words.

Yvette was very unhappy in the Valdemar family.
