Chapter 151 Inquiring
Yvette was totally thrown off when Lassie just picked up her phone outta nowhere. She snatched it back real quick.
"Mom, seriously? This is my work phone. Can you not mess with it?" Yvette grumbled.
Lassie just gave her a cheeky grin, like it was no big deal. "Sylvia's your buddy; she won't care."
Yvette put the phone to her ear. "Sylvia, sorry about that. No clue why my mom's here. Just ignore her. What's up?"
On the other end, Sylvia was dead silent. She'd been feeling uneasy ever since Lassie showed up and had called Yvette to give her a heads-up.
But when the call connected, it was Lassie who answered, her tone all warning-like, basically telling Sylvia to zip it.
Sylvia was stuck. She knew she should tell Yvette, but Lassie was her mom, after all.
Yvette was already drowning in the mess of her divorce from Albert and was barely holding it together. She didn't need more drama.
Sylvia bit her lip, thought it over, and decided she couldn't keep it from Yvette. "I'll fill you in once your mom's gone."
Yvette found Sylvia's cryptic words weird, and Lassie was getting impatient, hovering nearby.
Lassie eyed Yvette. "Are you done yet? What are you two chatting about?"
Feeling cornered, Yvette told Sylvia, "I'll call you back later."
After hanging up, Yvette turned to Lassie. "Mom, you gotta understand. Sylvia's not just my friend; she's my coworker. We need to talk for work. You're making it really hard for me to do my job, you get that?"
"Sorry," Lassie mumbled, clearly not meaning it. "I won't do it again, okay?"
Yvette frowned, clearly annoyed. "So, what do you want? Didn't you say Wayne and Zora already sorted it out?"
Lassie paused. "As your mom, I just wanna remind you to talk things out with Albert and not do anything rash."
Yvette stayed silent, her face stern.
Lassie patted her arm. "You keep working. I'll head out."
Yvette still had a ton of work to finish, and Lassie's interruption was soon forgotten.
By the time she wrapped everything up, it was already lunchtime. She grabbed a quick bite and was about to head back to the office when she remembered Sylvia's weird tone on the phone.
The more she thought about it, the stranger it seemed. Yvette decided to drop by Sylvia's office.
She knocked lightly and peeked in. "Sylvia, got a sec?"
Sylvia had been sitting at her computer, lost in thought about her convo with Lassie. Seeing Yvette, she sighed and waved her in. "Come on in, Yvette."
"I have no idea why my mom snatched my phone and answered it this morning," Yvette said, plopping down by Sylvia's desk. "Maybe she's just freaking out about my divorce with Albert and acting all weird."
"Yvette," Sylvia started, clenching her fists nervously. "Actually, your mom came to see me earlier."
Yvette's eyes widened in surprise. "She came to see you? Why?"
Sylvia hesitated, then asked, "Does your mom know about Violet?"
Yvette's heart sank, and she frowned.
She had thought Lassie was just being nosy, but it seemed like she really believed the divorce was because of Violet.
Yvette pursed her lips. "Yeah, they met once a long time ago. But it's been ages. I don't get why she suddenly brought it up and asked me..."
"Asked if Albert is divorcing you because of Violet?" Sylvia cut in.
Yvette's frown deepened. "She asked you that?"
"Yeah, I told her I didn't know and tried to brush her off," Sylvia said, worried. "She's being so unreasonable. Won't this mess things up with Albert?"
Yvette shook her head, a bitter smile on her face. "No, we're getting divorced anyway. It doesn't matter. Sorry, I didn't know she'd come to you."
"It's okay," Sylvia sighed. "Don't let her get to you. Albert really cares about you. He wouldn't leave you just because you lost the baby and go back to Violet."
Yvette smiled, trying to reassure her. "Don't worry, I know."
Leaving Sylvia's office, Yvette felt drained.
Lassie always seemed to stir up trouble, and now she had embarrassed her in front of Sylvia. If it weren't for knowing that Sylvia genuinely cared about her, Yvette would have been too embarrassed to face her again.
Yvette went back to her office and called Lassie.
But after several tries, Lassie didn't pick up.
When she finally did, Lassie spoke in a hushed tone, "Yvette, what's up?"
Yvette asked sternly, "Mom, did you go see Sylvia today?"
Lassie paused, then said, annoyed, "Sylvia told you? I told her not to tell you."
"Can you stop causing me trouble?" Yvette said, exhausted. "You're making things so awkward for me."
"What are you talking about? I'm just worried about you. How is that causing trouble? Did I embarrass you or something?" Lassie snapped, her temper flaring.
"Yes," Yvette said firmly. "You did embarrass me!"
"I'm your mother. I'm doing this for your own good! For the sake of your marriage!" Lassie raised her voice, then remembered where she was and lowered it. "Alright, I can't talk now. I have something to do. We'll discuss this later."
Lassie hung up and shoved her phone in her pocket, then immediately put on a fawning smile and stood up to greet.
Lassie beamed at Albert, who was walking towards her. "Albert, I hope I'm not interrupting your work. You look great, truly worthy of being my son-in-law from the Orlando family."
