Chapter 208 Lassie Was Faking Illness

The doc gave her some meds, but they were just to boost her energy. Before officially starting the treatment, Yvette didn't dare give Lassie any meds. Unexpectedly, Lassie, who was already feeling weak, managed to walk out and toss the trash with ease.

Yvette had a gut feeling the doc got it wrong, but remembering the weird look on Lassie's face, she kept an eye out for it. Her heart raced, and a frightening thought flashed through Yvette's mind, but she couldn't accept it.

Yvette took the trash bag from her and put it by the door, looking blank. "With how you are right now, you shouldn't be walking around. We or even Kyle will do this work. Please just go back and sit in your wheelchair."

Seeing Yvette upset because she got up to throw the trash, Lassie felt relieved. "I know you care about me, but since the surgery, I've either been in a wheelchair or lying in bed. It's really uncomfortable."

Yvette frowned at her. "Do you have to make me worry?"

"Alright, I'll listen to you." Lassie turned and walked back slowly.

Yvette watched Lassie move but didn't help her. Watching Lassie's tough steps, Yvette found it hard to match this with the Lassie who had just moved so easily.

Seeing Lassie sit down, Yvette casually said, "I contacted a top ALS specialist. Their hospital is one of the best in the country. Don't worry about the money; I've got it covered."

Lassie's eyes lit up. "Covered? Looks like Albert is really good to you."

"After lunch, I'll help you change clothes." Yvette ignored Lassie's comment. "We'll go to the hospital this afternoon for a follow-up."

Hearing "follow-up," Lassie's smile faded. "This afternoon? But I'm tired. I want to sleep for a bit. Can we go in a couple of days?"

Just then, Zora walked out of the room. Unaware of what had just happened in the living room, she went into the kitchen to make lunch and noticed the empty trash can. "Yvette, did you take out the trash? Why didn't you leave it for me?"

"It wasn't me." Yvette stared at Zora and said tentatively, "Lassie just walked out and threw it away herself."

Hearing this, Zora was stunned and gave Yvette an awkward look. That look made Yvette even more suspicious. Zora swallowed hard, clenched her fists behind her back, and her breathing got shaky.

Pretending not to notice, Yvette said, "Zora, we need to take Lassie for a follow-up this afternoon. Come with me."

Zora glanced at Lassie and cautiously asked, "Mom, is there a follow-up this afternoon?"

"No." Lassie waved her hand. "I don't want to go today. I'm really tired from just a few steps."

"You won't be tired." Yvette calmly looked at Lassie. "Zora and I will push you for the check-up."

Yvette turned and went back to her room, not giving Lassie a chance to refuse. "It's decided. I'll rest for a bit, and we'll go after lunch."

In the study.

Albert was glued to his computer, going through the documents Percy had sent about the Valdemar Group. The stuff was boring, but he didn't stop for a second.

The computer's glow lit up Albert's face and eyes. His phone buzzed next to him; it was Willard calling. Albert frowned, his face turning serious, and he quickly picked up.

Willard's voice crackled through the static. "Albert, I found out Yvette scheduled a follow-up for her mom this afternoon. But I couldn't get more details from her previous report because of privacy rules."

"Give me the hospital address," Albert said in a low voice. "I'll check it out myself."

Willard wasn't surprised. "Alright, I'll send you the doctor's contact info. Albert, are you suspecting something?"

"No." Albert paused. "When you did surgery on her mom, did you notice anything odd?"

"The patient was really thin, but nothing else stood out."

Albert narrowed his eyes. "Got it."

Sensing Albert was about to hang up, Willard couldn't help but ask, "Albert, are you really planning to take over the Valdemar Group?"

"Yes." Albert's voice was calm. "Are you worried I'll betray the Martinez family like David did?"

Willard hesitated, then said, "I can only hope not."

Albert pressed his lips together. "Don't worry."

At the hospital entrance.

A taxi was parked, but no one got out. Yvette pleaded, but her eyes were indifferent, "Mom, please, just let me have some peace of mind? If the follow-up results are good, we'll go home and rest. If not, we'll treat the illness properly. If you don't even want to get checked, how can we continue with the treatment?"

Lassie was so anxious her face turned red. "Who knows what scary instruments they'll use for the check-up? I'm not going! I'd rather die from this illness than go for a follow-up!"

"It's no different from the last check-up. You've already been through it; what's there to be afraid of?" Yvette said. "I know you're worried about the money, but that's already been taken care of!" Losing patience, Yvette got out of the car, took the wheelchair from the trunk, and reached out to grab Lassie's arm.

The usually weak Lassie suddenly showed surprising strength. Yvette grabbed Lassie's arm and looked back at Zora. "Zora, come help!"

With that sharp look, Zora knew Yvette must have figured it out. She pressed her lips together and finally bent down to help Yvette pull Lassie out.

Lassie couldn't resist their combined strength and was pushed into the wheelchair. Yvette pushed Lassie towards the entrance, but Lassie screamed, refusing to be checked.

Lassie's voice was sharp as she cursed, "Zora, how dare you help her drag me to the hospital?!"

Zora's face was extremely somber. She swallowed. "Mom, Yvette must know everything."

Yvette looked at Lassie in disbelief. "Mom, are you really faking your illness?"

At the same time, Albert got out of the car and looked up to see Yvette pushing Lassie by the roadside.

The phone rang, and Albert answered it. The person on the other end said, "Mr. Valdemar, according to the report, Yvette's mother is not an ALS patient."
