Chapter 193 Kiss Marks on Yvette

David was glued to Sissy's phone screen, while Sissy watched his changing expressions with a smug look. Albert had canceled all of Sissy's recent flights because of Yvette. David's sweet talk about Yvette only made Sissy more annoyed.

Trying to stifle her laughter, Sissy pretended to glance at her phone and then let out a dramatic sigh. With a fake apologetic look, Sissy said, "I got a bit too excited last time and snapped a pic without thinking. Didn't realize she was buying birth control pills. Oops, my bad. Don't tell anyone, okay?"

David lowered his gaze, remaining silent, with a slightly tense aura surrounding him. Sissy kept going, "I hope you don't take it too hard. Even though she and Albert are planning to split up, it wouldn't be great if Albert found out she was buying those pills."

David's face relaxed, and he smirked. "It's their business, not ours. Just delete the picture."

"Sure, deleting it now." Sissy pretended to delete the photo, then winked at David, teasing, "Now we have a little secret!"

"I gotta go," David said, not really responding to her words. He nodded and headed to the cashier. As soon as he turned away, his smile vanished.

Yvette didn't wait for David; instead, Sylvia showed up. Sylvia walked in with a bunch of supplements and set them by Lassie's bedside. She glanced at Lassie and then gently pulled Yvette out of the room. "Is she still out of it?"

"She woke up, but she's not doing great. Keeps dozing off," Yvette said, grabbing Sylvia's backpack from a nearby cabinet and handing it to her. "Finally had time to get your bag, huh?"

"Thanks." Sylvia's sharp eyes caught a faint red mark on Yvette's collarbone. She brushed it lightly and teased, "Looks like that stuff worked; you two had quite the night."

Yvette blushed and glared at Sylvia, not expecting her to bring it up. "Okay, okay, just kidding." Sylvia leaned in and hugged Yvette, apologizing, "Sorry, Yvette. I'll do better at protecting you."

Yvette patted Sylvia's hair. "It's fine, I don't blame you. You just wanted me to relax, right?"

"Let's stick to safer places next time." Sylvia let go of Yvette, glanced back at Lassie, and asked, "Has Albert come to see your mom?"

Yvette looked down, her voice flat. "No. We're divorcing; he doesn't have to visit."

Sylvia's heart ached for Yvette. She knew how much Yvette loved Albert. "Did your mom's surgery cost a lot? Do you still have money?" Sylvia asked, knowing exactly what Yvette was worried about.

Yvette licked her lips. "Yeah, it was expensive. Wayne helped out with some money too." Her answer was vague, but Sylvia could see the struggle.

"Will your mom give you money? What about your tuition and living expenses for studying abroad?" Sylvia asked bluntly.

Yvette sighed. "We'll figure it out when she wakes up. I'm still in the application stage, so no rush."

Just then, a knock came at the hospital room door. Yvette opened it to find David standing there, arms full of stuff."Why'd you bring so much?" Yvette asked, surprised.

David nodded, his expression a mix of emotions as he looked at Yvette. He set down the things he was holding and was about to speak when he noticed the faint red mark on her collarbone. His eyes darkened, but he kept his face neutral.

David forced a smile, but his eyes were cold. "Yvette, I have to get back to work. Since your friend is here, I'll head out."His distant tone made Yvette feel uneasy. "I really appreciate your visit. If you have things to do, go ahead," she said gratefully.

"Alright." David put down the stuff and left.

Sylvia, who had been watching, asked, "He didn't seem too happy."

Yvette shrugged. "Maybe he's just swamped with work. He's always busy."

Meanwhile, the setting sun cast a warm glow through the car window as Albert squinted and dialed Willard's number.

Willard seemed busy; the phone rang several times before he picked up. "Albert, what's up?"

Albert grabbed his sunglasses from the center console and put them on. "I wanted to ask about the patient you operated on last time. How's she doing?"

"You haven't visited her yet?" Willard sounded surprised but continued, "She's been moved from the ICU to a private room, just like you arranged. You should go see her."

Albert's face remained stoic. "No need. Just wanted to know her condition. You're the doctor; you can explain it better."

"Isn't your ex-wife also a doctor? She should be better at this than your academic-focused uncle," Willard teased. "You set everything up, call to check on her, but don't visit. Are you concerned or not?"

Albert's usually calm demeanor cracked a bit. He furrowed his brows. "I'm just asking about her condition."

Sensing Albert's growing irritation, Willard got serious. "She's in a regular room now, so she's recovering well. If you visit, I can take you to see her."

"No need," Albert replied.

Just then, another call came in. Albert glanced at it; it was James. "I have to go. James is calling," Albert said.

Willard's tone turned heavy. "Take it." He had always disliked the man who caused Sarah's death.

Albert hung up and answered James's call, "What do you need?"

"Get to the hospital right now!" James's voice was hoarse and urgent.

Albert hated when James talked to him like that, but something felt off. A sense of dread washed over him, and without thinking, Albert turned the car towards the hospital. "What happened?" Albert asked, his voice tense.

James replied, "Your grandpa passed away."
