Chapter 118 He Missed Her Again

The car was dimly lit, just a faint glow from the streetlights outside.

David didn't start the engine or turn on the lights. He just sat there, quietly.

In the alley, the occasional sound of footsteps echoed, but they quickly faded away.

David's mind replayed Yvette's last words before she went upstairs.

"Of course, it's necessary."

She always treated him with affection and gentleness, but there was always a distance in her eyes and actions.

David took a deep breath, his eyes flickering with an unclear light. He gripped the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles turning white.

Yvette had married Albert and was expecting their child.

She was his sister-in-law.

Once again, he missed her.

David's jaw tightened as he closed his eyes, recalling that summer.

Their parents' relationship had fallen apart, and they were getting a divorce. The brothers were sent back to the countryside, where they met Yvette. She was lively, outgoing, pure, and cute, and both brothers got along well with her.

David had long noticed the special bond between Yvette and Albert.

On the surface, Yvette seemed closer to David, but she only showed her true emotions around Albert.

One day, their grandparents had prepared dinner and asked David to fetch Albert.

David agreed and went out, only to find Albert and Yvette walking side by side.

Yvette had her arms crossed, looking angry. Albert seemed amused, glancing at her without saying anything.

"Albert, dinner's ready," David jogged up to them and smiled at Yvette. "Did you two have another fight?"

Yvette glared at Albert, clearly not wanting to talk to him.

Albert laughed and pulled Yvette's braid. "Coming to dinner?"

"I'm not going! I said I don't want to talk to you."

"But you just did, dummy."

"Enough, Albert, stop teasing her."

"I'm not teasing her; I'm just afraid she'll get too mad." Albert still had that nonchalant look, raising an eyebrow to provoke Yvette.

"Albert!" Yvette said, chasing after him to hit him.

Albert dodged nimbly, and Yvette kept chasing him.

David watched them, feeling troubled. Just as he was about to intervene, Yvette stepped on a stone and almost twisted her ankle.

Seeing she was about to fall, Albert quickly turned back and grabbed her.

Yvette bumped into Albert's chest, her face turning red.

To hide her embarrassment, Yvette grabbed Albert's arm and hit him a few times.

They started playfully fighting again, while David stood there, staring at Yvette's flushed ears, suddenly understanding something.

From that moment, David knew he had to do something.

David wanted to meet Yvette alone, hoping to at least express his feelings to her.

Just as David had this thought, Albert casually asked him while eating.

"David, where are you going tonight?" Albert didn't look up, his tone calm.

David paused. His selfishness told him not to let Albert know about meeting Yvette.

So David played it cool. "I'm heading to town tonight to pick up a few things."

"Town, huh?" Albert looked up, giving him a knowing glance. "Got something to buy?"

"Yeah." David shrugged nonchalantly. "What about you? Any plans tonight?"

"I'm just staying home to do some homework."

"Alright." David felt a bit relieved.

They continued eating in silence, the only sound being their chewing.

Even though it was normal not to talk during meals, the silence felt awkward to David.

Yvette once mentioned she loved watching fireflies.

David lied about going to town and left right after dinner. He had already asked around the village and found out there was a spot at the foot of a nearby mountain where fireflies appeared at dusk.

He pulled out the map someone had drawn for him, studying it carefully as he set off.

But since it was his first time looking for the place, and the map wasn't very accurate, he made a lot of wrong turns.

Finally, as the sun was setting, David found the spot where the fireflies appeared.

Seeing the flickering lights ahead, David felt a rush of happiness and excitement.

If Yvette saw this, she would definitely love it!

Just as he was thinking this, he suddenly heard familiar laughter ahead.

David froze, his body stiffening, and a bad feeling washed over him.

Sure enough, it was Yvette's voice.

"This place is really beautiful!"

"Of course it is."

The male voice was proud; it was Albert's arrogant response.

David found himself walking to a tall stone pillar, and saw Yvette and Albert.

They stood side by side, Yvette reaching out in awe to touch the beautiful scene, while Albert stood with his hands in his pockets, looking down at her quietly.

So Albert had lied too. He didn't stay home to do homework but brought Yvette to see the fireflies she loved.

"Albert, was it tough to find this place?"

"No, I just stumbled upon it."

"I see your shoes are worn out."

"That's from playing basketball."

Yvette didn't respond, just looked up at Albert.

David stood behind the stone pillar, watching Yvette look up at Albert.

They stood among the flickering fireflies, and through the faint light, David clearly saw the expression on Yvette's face and the affection in her eyes for Albert.

At that moment, he knew he had lost her.

Recalling their past, David felt it was hard to breathe.

He started the car, rolled down the window, and greedily breathed in the fresh air, but still felt a tightness in his chest, making it hard to breathe.

David didn't know what went wrong. When his mom was around, no matter what happened, he would first look at her face before deciding what to do to please her, never prioritizing his own needs.

But Albert was different. Albert was always straightforward, always expressing his thoughts directly.

David thought that being obedient and well-behaved would make him more likable.

But the result was always the opposite; he was always the one being ignored.

David's jaw tightened, and the usually gentle smile on his face was now hard and cold.

He gripped the steering wheel tightly, his eyes flashing with a sharp, sinister light, and a chill emanated from his entire being.
