Chapter 136 Major Client

Joe was in the final stretch with cancer, and Margaret had totally lost her mojo for work. Quitting was just a matter of time.

Monday morning, Elsa stepped out with her coffee and almost ran into Margaret, who was holding a box and waiting for the elevator.

Margaret looked more beat than ever, and for once, she didn't have any snarky comments for Elsa.

Seeing Margaret break down like that made Elsa feel kinda uneasy too.

"Don't get too cocky," Margaret rasped as they passed each other.

"You're wrong, Ms. Collins. I never wished for your bad luck," Elsa shot back honestly. Leslie's death was already a lot to handle. She was all about taking down the Miller family and never really gave Margaret much thought.

Margaret sneered, like she had more to say, but when a coworker walked by, she clammed up and walked away quietly.

Elsa didn't have strong feelings about Joe—no hate, no sympathy. To her, Joe was just some guy. She was more worried about Luke. Watching someone he cared about fade away must be killing him.

With Margaret out, Dalton Banks' design department quickly hired a new manager, Sylvie Lee, a Fronce woman who had limited English proficiency.

Sylvie had some serious creds in jewelry design and had a cool approach: giving designers lots of freedom and downtime, without sticking her nose in their business.

This gave Elsa room to grow. She felt like she learned more in a week than she did in months under Margaret's rule.

More importantly, Sylvie wasn't into Luke and didn't bring any personal drama to work to mess with Elsa.

"This new manager is awesome. I feel like I've grown a lot," Elsa told Chloe after a few days of working together.

With Margaret out of the picture, Elsa felt she could finally show what she was made of and breathed a sigh of relief.

But things are never that simple.

Another week went by, and Dalton Banks' sales department landed a big client who specifically wanted Elsa to come up with a design proposal.

Since her big win in the last competition, Elsa had taken on quite a few private custom orders, but to her surprise, this client was asking for over a million bucks' worth of gemstones and specifically wanted a proposal from her, a newbie designer with just a few months of experience.

The sales team set up a meeting with the client at a café near the Taylor Group. When Elsa got there, she saw Dylan and Karen all cozy together, while Dalton Banks' salesperson was showing them a catalog.

All her doubts suddenly made sense.

Elsa knew Karen was up to no good. Ignoring Karen's smug look, she calmly sat down across from them.

"Mr. Jones, I'm Elsa Miller, a designer at Dalton Banks," Elsa greeted politely, without shaking hands with Dylan.

Dylan had only heard of Elsa and had never seen her in person. Seeing her now, he was taken aback.

Elsa was drop-dead gorgeous, with an overly delicate face and watery eyes. Yet, her vibe was totally chill, full of noble coldness, a contrast that was indeed captivating.

No wonder Jonny had been moping around for so long because of Elsa.

Dylan just stared at Elsa in a daze until Karen nudged his arm, snapping him out of it.

"Ms. Miller is so beautiful. No wonder my son can't stop thinking about you," Dylan said with a big grin.

Dylan's stare was so bold that it gave Elsa the creeps.
