Chapter 318 Nicotine Craving
The late night brought a chill. Elsa, smoking a cigarette, turned to look at him, her voice hoarse.
She had just been awakened from her thoughts and didn't respond.
Luke's coat slipped off and landed on her shoulders as he sat down beside her.
It was the first time since their divorce that they sat together so calmly, and for a moment, they both felt a bit breathless.
"Where did you get the cigarette?" The cigarette in Elsa's hand was somewhat unusual, seemingly thicker and longer than a regular one.
"Rolled it with George's tobacco."
George liked to smoke a pipe, and his tobacco was top-notch. The fact that Elsa thought to ask him for some and could roll her own was quite surprising.
Luke looked at the cigarette Elsa had rolled and couldn't help but laugh. "Is that hotel notepaper?"
Using hotel notepaper to roll tobacco worth thousands of dollars an ounce, Elsa was really not particular.
Elsa saw Luke laughing, gave him a faint sidelong glance, turned her head away, and silently finished her cigarette.
"Elsa, if you say you're not jealous, I won't believe it."
Seeing that she didn't respond, Luke's voice also became hoarse.
If she didn't have something on her mind, why would she come out here to smoke in the middle of the night? Luke guessed that her thoughts were probably related to him.
The night was so quiet that Elsa uncharacteristically didn't argue.
She wasn't sure if Luke and Margaret had a sexual relationship, but it wasn't something she could ask about.
After a long silence, so long that Luke thought she wouldn't speak again, Elsa suddenly looked him in the eye.
"Let's not appear in each other's worlds anymore, Luke. Give me some time to forget you."
Her eyes reflected the starlight and streetlights, and Luke was just an insignificant black dot in them.
By now, Luke couldn't bring himself to ask for reconciliation.
"Let the past be the past. You are still the person I am most grateful for."
Elsa stood up, shook Luke's coat, and stuffed it into his arms.
She never asked about him and Margaret; she didn't have the right.
"Nothing happened between Margaret and me."
Whether she thought he was being self-indulgent or not, he had to say it.
Elsa nodded noncommittally. "You're a good person. No matter who you're with, I wish you happiness."
Luke was annoyed.
They still ended up parting on bad terms.
The group played for another day and only returned the next evening.
For some reason, George and Karida felt the atmosphere was strange.
Margaret, Luke, and Elsa interacted with the two of them but had no interaction with each other.
"Elsa, how's my tobacco?" George suddenly asked on the way back.
"Excellent, George. Give me some more." Elsa leaned in to praise him.
"Sure, as much as you want." George laughed.
Luke frowned.
Elsa didn't have a smoking habit. She used to occasionally smoke his cigarettes when she had something on her mind. Now, had she developed a smoking habit?
Her body couldn't handle it. Drinking a little was his limit of tolerance; how could she become addicted to smoking?
He was about to say something but suddenly remembered his current status and pursed his lips, saying nothing.
They dropped Elsa off at her place first.
After Elsa got out of the car, Luke suddenly said, "Don't give her any."
"What?" The people in the car were confused.
"George, don't give her any more tobacco." Luke repeated awkwardly.
"You care about her but can't say it to her face?" George laughed.
Seeing Luke and Margaret's interaction yesterday, George had suspected that Luke had moved on and felt quite regretful.
Now it seemed he was just hiding it well.
Luke frowned but said nothing.
With their relationship at this point, anything he did would seem humble.
Rather than let Elsa look down on him, he might as well let go with pride.
But letting go was easier said than done!
A few days later, Elsa was daydreaming in her office when a strange call came in.
"I'm in Maplewood City. Ms. Miller, are you free?"
Elsa immediately knew who it was.
"Brian, what are you doing here!" Her voice was slightly excited. After speaking, she felt it was inappropriate and steadied herself, asking, "Of course, Mr. Gonzalez, what would you like for dinner?"
Brian had been a crucial help in her takedown of the Miller family, and Elsa was grateful to him. She had also saved up some questions to ask him over the past few days.
"Just call me by my name," Brian laughed on the other end.
