Chapter 340 Fever

The familiar scent of orange blossoms lingered at the tip of her nose, and she heard Luke's low chuckle by her ear, "Up so late and not sleeping, are you here to keep watch for me?"

Caught in the act, Elsa's cheeks suddenly burned, but she retorted, "Luke, you're so full of yourself. I couldn't sleep, so I came out for some fresh air. What does that have to do with you?"

Luke rested his head in the crook of her neck.

"Then why couldn't you sleep? Are you afraid I'm sleeping with Hailey?"

"Luke, get a grip on yourself! We're divorced! Who you sleep with is your business! You're dating Hailey, and you come looking for me in the middle of the night, what do you take me for?!" Elsa's secret was exposed, and her reaction was more intense than ever, showing her emotions for the first time.

Luke noticed it too, and his heart warmed. He didn't dare to keep teasing her, so he turned her towards him and held her close.

"How about a kiss from your ex-husband, and then you go back to sleep, okay?" He moved to kiss the corner of her lips, and before she could push him away, he trapped her in his arms and kissed her lips.

The strong scent of cigarettes exchanged in their mouths as Luke entwined his tongue with hers, refusing to let go.

Elsa was easily aroused by him, everything happening so suddenly.

She struggled to regain her senses, kicking him with her leg and digging her nails into his arm.

"Let go," Elsa panted.

"I'll let go when I've had enough, baby." Luke trapped her rebellious leg between his, letting her nails dig into his flesh, desperately capturing her breath, chasing and playing with her tongue.

They kissed for over ten minutes, and by the end, Elsa had no strength left to stand, only then did Luke let her go.

"Goodnight, baby." He kissed her forehead again before returning to his place.

"Fuck!" What did Luke take her for! Elsa's cheeks were flushed, and she couldn't help but curse.

The next morning, Elsa woke up to find she had a fever.

It was a high fever, her face burning red, so weak that a gust of wind could knock her over.

The ranch had only one doctor at the health center, so she asked the hostess of the house she was staying at to help buy some fever medicine. She took it with the hot water from breakfast and went back to bed.

Originally, Leo had left an intern designer to take care of her, but after she repeatedly insisted she was fine, the intern also went out for some fieldwork.

Less than half an hour after taking the fever medicine, Elsa felt drowsy.

Her fever hadn't subsided, and before falling asleep, all Elsa could think about was not to pass the illness to Luke.

At first, she just felt hot all over, then cold sweat started pouring, and later, Elsa felt itchy all over, like thousands of bugs were biting her limbs and bones.

She didn't know how long it had been, but layer after layer of cold sweat covered her, red rashes appeared on her back and arms, and her breathing became increasingly labored. Only then did Elsa realize she was allergic to the fever medicine!

With immense willpower, Elsa forced herself to wake up, rolled off the bed, and struggled out of the house.

She didn't have the strength to call for help and fainted at the door.

"Elsa, wake up!"

"Honey!"

"Baby!"

Luke's desperate shouts echoed in her ears.

"So annoying, shut up." Elsa couldn't open her eyes, her voice weak, but Luke heard her.

He had left with Leo's convoy early in the morning, and after observing for a long time without seeing Elsa, he felt a pang of unease and decided to come back and check.

He hadn't reached Elsa's place when he saw her struggling to crawl out and collapse at the door from a distance.

"Don't be afraid!" The car had been driven away, so Luke returned on horseback. He took off his coat, wrapped Elsa in it, mounted the horse with her, and pulled out his phone to navigate to the nearest hospital.

The nearest hospital was nearly 60 miles from the ranch, a three-hour ride on horseback.

"Hang in there, we'll get to a place with a car and drive there!" Luke held Elsa, galloping on the horse, soothing her softly.

Elsa was dizzy, unbearably itchy all over, and too weak to breathe. She leaned weakly against Luke's chest, listening to his steady heartbeat, just wanting to sleep to feel a bit more comfortable.

Even after being divorced for so long, she was still so familiar with his heartbeat, clinging to it like a baby to its mother's embrace.

Elsa's arm loosely wrapped around Luke's waist, gradually calming down.

The ranch was far from the outside world, and cars were rarely seen on the road. Luke called Karida and Terry, but they had already driven 150 miles in the opposite direction.

He galloped on the ranch road, only hearing Elsa's breathing grow weaker, his heart tightening with anxiety.

"Don't sleep, Elsa, you can't sleep!" He shook her vigorously with the arm holding her.
