Chapter 151 Talk to Margaret
They hooked up till midnight. Elsa could tell there was zilch going on between Luke and Margaret 'cause it was obvious Luke hadn't gotten any action in a while.
"Cut it out," she rasped. Elsa got all sleepy and eventually dozed off in his arms.
"You're so fragile," Luke murmured, holding her and gently rubbing her back during his downtime.
Next morning, Luke had to bounce early for work in Maplewood City. They hit the kitchen for breakfast earlier than planned. Elsa looked fresh, sipping on coffee and munching a croissant. Suddenly, her face went beet red, like she remembered something.
Luke noticed. "What's on your mind?" he asked, tearing off a piece of her croissant and popping it into his mouth. Their fingers brushed, and he felt a little flutter in his chest.
"I'm scared someone will find the bedsheet," Elsa whispered.
Luke cracked up. They hadn't bothered to change the sheet last night, and in the morning, it looked like a wet, wrinkled rag.
He glanced at Elsa and pinched her cheek. If he wasn't in a rush, he would've wanted another round.
Luke had a 9 AM flight and soon landed in Maplewood City. He spent half the day dealing with urgent stuff and then hit up Margaret.
They met at a café in the Taylor Building. Margaret seemed stoked by Luke's invite, rocking a bright red dress and killer makeup.
"Luke, I knew you'd come find me," Margaret said, thinking Luke felt bad for ditching her and secretly pleased.
"Margaret, I gotta tell you something," Luke said, holding a cup of espresso, his voice low.
Margaret sensed something was off. She sat across from Luke, nervously twisting her fingers.
"Luke."
"Margaret, why'd you lie? You added Elsa on Facebook to trick her into thinking I was on a business trip with you. You were trying to mess things up between us." Luke's face was serious and cold, like he was looking at a stranger.
Margaret freaked. "Luke, don't hate me! I was just jealous you took Elsa on the Ferris wheel, so I posted that out of anger!"
She wasn't sure if Elsa had shown Luke the screenshot. At this point, lying was pointless, so she spilled everything as an act of love.
Luke couldn't blame a woman who loved him deeply. For things done in the name of love, he was more forgiving.
"Luke, I love you. I just can't stand you being so close to Elsa!" Margaret's tears came easily, and now her eyes were red again.
Lately, whenever Luke saw Margaret, she cried nine times out of ten. At first, he felt guilty, thinking he had let her down. Now, he just found it annoying.
"Margaret, I've told you a million times. You can't force feelings. Although we grew up together and our past feelings were real, that's all in the past. I'm married now. If you can give us your blessing, I can still treat you like a sister. But if you keep trying to come between us, I'll have no choice but to cut ties with you."
Luke knew his words were harsh, but he didn't want Margaret wasting her time on him. This was the best way.
Margaret cried even harder. "Luke, do you love her? Do you really love her?" She rarely showed such a hysterical side.
Luke stayed quiet. This was a question he had asked himself countless times.
He just held his tiny cup of espresso, savoring it while waiting for Margaret to finish crying.
In the past, he never drank espresso. To him, it was just a base for other coffee flavors. But after meeting Elsa, who only drank espresso, he got curious and tried it. Surprisingly, he found himself appreciating the pure bitterness of it.
The taste reminded him of Elsa's life - something she once mentioned while sipping her espresso and playfully poking fun at herself. And that stuck with him.Thinking of Elsa, Luke's expression softened. Elsa wasn't a bad person, and he wouldn't mind spoiling her for a lifetime.
