Chapter 223 I Can't Sleep Well Without You
George was getting up there in age, and with the younger folks all wrapped up in their careers, it was no surprise he felt lonely sometimes. But seeing Elsa's genuine smile made his day.
"Don't worry about it. Even if you hadn't come, Luke would've. He promised to play a hundred games of chess with me just for you," George said with a sly grin, shooting a teasing look at Luke.
Elsa was taken aback and glanced at Luke, but his face was as unreadable as ever.
"I always wondered what kind of woman Luke would end up with. Never thought it'd be someone who could keep him in line," George added.
"Grandpa, I can't keep him in line," Elsa joked, feeling a bit dramatic. She quickly changed the subject, "We'll come visit you again in the spring."
"Can't keep him in line? I don't believe it. Luke would do anything for you, even risk his life," Karida chimed in.
Luke shot her a warning look.
Last night was a whirlwind, and today was packed. Now, as Luke and Elsa sat in first class, they finally had a moment to themselves.
Luke studied Elsa's face and noticed she looked thinner and a bit worn out.
She must've been really tired these past few days.
"Elsa, do you think I care about a few million dollars? Losing money has completely killed your appetite," Luke said, asking the flight attendant for a blanket and wrapping it around her. She felt so thin, almost fragile.
"What are you talking about? How could I lose? Didn't you see the trophies I shipped?" Elsa, always competitive, had to defend herself. "I lost to Brian on purpose later! Though you did help me out in the end."
Her voice trailed off, clearly lacking confidence.
"Sometimes I'm just too full of myself," she suddenly said.
Luke gave her a curious look.
Elsa continued, "Brian said he got hooked on gambling because he could get whatever he wanted at my age. I thought I could too."
"You can," Luke replied.
Whatever she wanted, even if she couldn't get it herself, he'd make sure she did.
"Not really," Elsa shook her head slightly. "I schemed so much, but in the end, it still came down to you to get things done."
She was grateful to Luke, but it didn't lessen her sense of defeat.
"In recent years, countless people have tried to get Brian out of retirement through George, but George said only you succeeded. Do you know why?" Luke said, gently pressing his fingers to her furrowed brow, trying to smooth it out.
"Why?" Elsa asked.
"Because Brian thought your way of doing things was just like his when he was young. I just gave it a little push; it was already a done deal."
Luke was telling the truth. Without Elsa's groundwork over the past few days, he wouldn't have known where to start.
Elsa's nose tingled, and she grabbed Luke's hand that was massaging her brow.
He could've taken credit for it, but he didn't.
Just like in the past, every time she did something, he would clean up the mess without saying a word.
If she kept giving him the cold shoulder after he treated her like this, it would be pretty heartless. Elsa took a deep breath.
"Honey, have I lost weight again recently?" She looked at Luke with bright eyes, trying to change the subject.
"You know it yourself, and you're still not taking care?" Luke raised an eyebrow at her.
"Oh, come on, I can't sleep well without you, so of course, I'd lose weight," Elsa exaggeratedly whined, throwing herself into his arms.
Luke's expression didn't change much, but his eyes darkened the moment she leaned in, and his breath hitched.
She was back to her lively self, which meant she wasn't mad anymore.
"Let's make love tonight. A bit of exercise will help you sleep well," Luke whispered with a low laugh, nibbling on Elsa's ear, clearly in a good mood.
Elsa's face turned red, and she whispered in protest, "That's not what I meant!"
"Don't be shy, I get you," said Luke.
She couldn't see his face, but she could already imagine his mischievous smile.
"Pervert!" she shyly rebuked.
"The plane is about to take off. Fasten your seatbelts and consider my feelings," Karida, sitting behind them, couldn't hear what they were saying but already felt it was a bit too much.
