Chapter 319 The Truth

Elsa and Brian had arranged to meet at a barbecue joint, which was Brian's idea.

A man in a five-figure T-shirt and denim shorts and a woman even more stunning than a movie star sat at a roadside barbecue stall, eating skewers that cost $3 each and drinking canned industrial beer. The scene was full of incongruity.

"Welcome to Maplewood City," Elsa said, raising her can and smiling at Brian.

After going through the Miller family incident, they had become quite familiar with each other. Now, they had shed their upper-class facades and revealed their true selves.

Thinking back to six months ago, Brian was still someone out of her reach. To get his attention, she had to go to great lengths and spend millions of dollars. Now, they could sit on plastic stools, eating and drinking without caring about their image, and even call each other by their first names.

"Thanks," Brian clinked his can with hers and drank it all in one go.

Elsa guessed that Brian was here to take George back, but according to him, he had to meet a friend before picking up George. This friend was someone who had helped him earn his first money and had come to Maplewood City last year to develop his business.

Given that Brian's early ventures were not entirely aboveboard, Elsa listened quietly to what he was willing to share and didn't ask about what he wasn't.

"Elsa, you remind me so much of myself when I was young," Brian couldn't help but remark again.

"This setting makes your Green Submariner look fake," Elsa joked instead of responding to his comment.

"No, an old man wearing a fake Green Submariner couldn't get a woman as stunning as you to eat barbecue with him," Brian laughed along.

Brian said Elsa was very much like him when he was young, and Jonathan had said the same thing.

At first, Elsa thought these elite men were overestimating her, but later she understood what they meant by "like": they both had a sense of purpose and were willing to go to great lengths to achieve their goals.

And like her, Brian came from a humble background and had endured hardships.

Elsa knew that she had once stood at the same height as these people by being Luke's wife, but now she had been brought back to her original form. She was just an ordinary 21-year-old girl who hadn't even finished college.

By the time they finished the barbecue, it was nearly midnight, and they were both a bit tipsy, walking unsteadily back.

Since Elsa's place was nearby, Brian decided to walk her to her building.

"The most regrettable thing this time is that Mark got hurt," Elsa suddenly said softly as they neared her building.

Although Mark was given probation, it was still a sentence and not very honorable.

"Twenty million dollars for a year of probation—Mark made a killing," Brian said indifferently.

"What? Who gave him twenty million dollars?" Elsa was shocked. Didn't Brian only take two million from her back then?

"Didn't you ask Luke to give Mark twenty million dollars to speed things up? Mark was prepared to go to jail. Two years of freedom for twenty million dollars is a huge win for him."

There were few people on the street at night, and Brian's voice, though not loud, made Elsa's eardrums ache.

She had been wondering why her plan had gone so smoothly and beautifully. It turned out Luke had been secretly handling everything!

Thinking it through, Luke must have been uneasy about Mark, the "glove," and had secretly investigated him. After confirming that Mark wouldn't drag Elsa into jail, he allowed him into the Miller family.

The original plan was to proceed step by step without taking risks, but after Luke saw her lose the child and feel hopeless, he angrily sped up the process.

Later, when the Miller family wouldn't let her go, Luke used money laundering evidence to confront Ian, not only saving her but also helping Mark avoid prison.

Luke had done so much, and each action was crucial!

Yet, even when they were at odds, he never used these deeds to claim credit!

He didn't even say a word when she mocked the Taylor family for only caring about interests.

Just because the Miller family was Elsa's Achilles' heel, he didn't want to use it to manipulate her.

"I didn't know," Elsa murmured, her voice carrying a sense of emptiness in the night wind.

Brian nodded slightly, "Well, Luke really..."

He reached out and patted her shoulder, leaving the rest of his sentence unfinished.
