Chapter 386 Good Words Cannot Persuade Someone Seeking Death

Elsa and Chloe weren't late, but they didn't get around to lunch until 1 PM.

During the meal, Lara's eyes were glued to Elsa, while Jonathan kept a close eye on Chloe, making sure she had soup and water just when she needed it. When Chloe worried about spilling on her clothes, he even got up to grab a special napkin and placed it on her lap.

Chloe blushed and whispered her thanks, eating her meal like a well-cared-for child.

Elsa couldn't believe Jonathan had no feelings for Chloe.

Lara, noticing her son's unusual attentiveness, couldn't hide her smile.

"You two should come over more often. Eric's in 12th grade and stays at school. Jonathan's rarely home, and it's no fun for an old lady like me in this big house," she said, smiling and patting Elsa's hand. "You don't have a grandmother's house to go to anymore, right? Your mom and I look so much alike, you can consider me your grandma from now on."

"As for Chloe, we'll see how things go. For now, call me Mrs. King, but that might change in the future."

Elsa smiled and gave Chloe a knowing look.

Chloe, who had just taken a sip of soup, choked and struggled to speak.

"Um, Mrs. King, Mr. King and I aren't..." She wanted to say they weren't in that kind of relationship but couldn't get the words out, flustered.

"Alright, alright, just teasing you," Jonathan said casually, patting her back and handing her a napkin to wipe her mouth.

He didn't seem like someone who wasn't interested in taking things further with Chloe, contrary to what Chloe had told Elsa about men not being picky when women throw themselves at them.

After lunch, Lara arranged for afternoon tea, and they stayed at the King residence until after dinner before heading back.

Passing by Luke's villa on the way home, Elsa couldn't help but glance over. The Cullinan wasn't there; he was indeed out.

Chloe was lost in her thoughts and didn't have the energy to tease Elsa.

"I don't think Mr. King is against a long-term relationship with you," Elsa said as they neared Chloe's house.

"And from Lara's attitude, she clearly supports you two being together."

Elsa spoke as an outsider, but Chloe lacked the confidence.

"Let's take it one step at a time. Since I've decided to follow my heart without seeking a title or even love, I won't think about these things. Worrying will only make it more painful," she sighed.

"Aren't your parents pressuring you to get married?"

The unspoken question was how her parents could accept her being with a much older man.

"They pressured me when I was younger. But if I hold out until I'm 30, 40, 50, I believe they'll gradually come to terms with it. By then, whether I choose to marry someone or live alone, they probably won't interfere."

As they reached the entrance to Chloe's apartment complex, Elsa suddenly stopped and looked at her intently. "Chloe, I never thought you'd be such a hopeless romantic."

Chloe had already thought about how to deal with her parents; she was beyond saving.

"Good advice is wasted on someone determined to self-destruct. Just let me be," Chloe said, lowering her eyes in defeat.

With Chloe's words, Elsa found herself at a loss for how to persuade her and fell silent.

Turning back to her own home, she stepped out of the elevator and saw a familiar figure leaning against her door, smoking. It was Luke.
