Chapter 436 Mr. King is Very Angry
The leather box was plain and unremarkable, about the size of a palm, and not at all luxurious.
Chloe casually opened it, only to be momentarily blinded by the dazzling light.
Who would have thought such a plain box would contain such a treasure?
It was a necklace, with over twenty pea-sized emeralds set in platinum and tiny diamonds, shimmering under the light and impossible to look away from.
"You left something here," Chloe said as she called Jonathan.
On the other end, Jonathan was clearly trying to suppress his anger from their earlier argument.
"It's a gift for you. Do you like it?"
Jonathan wasn't sure if Chloe would overthink the fact that he had given diamond earrings to Giselle, but he felt he needed to give her something even more valuable to feel at ease.
He had bought this necklace at a high price in Stellaria City. Chloe had a classically beautiful face, and he thought the gemstone necklace would look regal on her. It seemed perfect for her when he saw it.
But Chloe wasn't having it. "This is too expensive, Mr. King. I can't accept it."
Jonathan was driving home, already in a bad mood from being ignored by Chloe. Hearing her refusal made him frown even more.
"Chloe, whether we're still a couple or not, you were with me for a long time. This necklace is a thank you for your companionship," he explained, trying to keep his temper in check.
Chloe had seen it all since she was young. One look and she knew this necklace was worth at least seven figures. She couldn't help but laugh. "We were at best friends with benefits, not a couple. If you don't give me this, it's still mutual consent. Giving it to me makes it seem like I'm a prostitute."
Her words were harsh. Chloe wanted a clean break, and saying this would make it hard for Jonathan to insist on giving her the necklace.
Unexpectedly, Jonathan laughed in anger. "Chloe, do you think I, Jonathan, need to pay for a woman?"
"Who knows? Even if Mr. King is charming, you're still getting old," Chloe retorted. She was an extreme person by nature. When she liked Jonathan, she liked him intensely. Now that she had decided to break up, she was completely unrestrained, saying things that cut deep.
"If you don't like it, throw it on the street! Now you think I'm old, but you were all over me before!" Jonathan was stuck in traffic, honking furiously, his tone colder than ever.
Before Chloe could respond, he had already hung up.
Jonathan was usually a gentle person. If Luke were an iceberg, Jonathan was a gemstone.
A gentleman, warm and smooth. But now, this gemstone was enraged, showing a side he had never revealed.
Yes, back then, she had begged him to sleep with her.
Chloe smiled bitterly, feeling a pang in her chest.
The next day, Elsa happened to be at the Diamond Crest Clubhouse selecting wine for a client. They talked about the incident in the office.
Chloe showed Elsa the necklace Jonathan had given her, and Elsa's eyes widened in surprise.
"Uncle Jonathan really knows his stuff. This emerald is top-notch. Look at this quality, it's incomparable."
Chloe sighed. Comparing an emerald to a beer bottle? Was this really coming from a jewelry designer?
"This is worth a few million dollars," Elsa assessed. "If he's willing to spend this much on you, he still cares about you."
Chloe was indifferent. "I don't care what he thinks anymore."
She was about to ask Elsa to help return the necklace when the receptionist called. "Ms. Clark, a Ms. Montague is here to see you."
Why was Giselle here? Chloe exchanged a glance with Elsa and said, "Send her up."
Elsa knowingly retreated to the office's lounge.
