Chapter 214 Don't Be Afraid
The next week, Luke was a no-show at the hospital.
But he did send Lisa to look after her, and every day, he had people deliver all sorts of flowers and health products to the hospital.
"What's with all the flowers? Since when did Luke become a florist?" Chloe asked when she came to visit, eyeing the flower-filled hospital room.
"Who knows," Elsa said, looking at the room full of flowers and feeling a headache coming on.
"You should think it over. I checked Luke's spending records from that night and talked to Terry. Luke drank a ton that night, so it's unlikely he and Margaret hooked up. Margaret was probably just putting on a show to upset you," Chloe said.
"Weren't you just cursing out Luke for me a few days ago?" Elsa glanced at Chloe and laughed.
"Yeah, I was, but I don't want you to regret anything," Chloe said matter-of-factly.
"If you put the same effort into yourself as you do into caring for me, you wouldn't still be single," Elsa teased, feeling warm inside.
"You dare mock me, you ungrateful brat!" Chloe pounced and pinched her thigh.
The hospital room door was open, and Jonathan walked in just in time to see Chloe and Elsa playfully fighting on the bed.
"Mr. King," Elsa greeted him first.
Chloe, startled, fell off the bed.
Jonathan quickly caught Chloe by the waist, stopping her from hitting the ground.
Chloe's face turned bright red.
Jonathan and Elsa chatted for nearly half an hour, during which Chloe stayed silent.
Elsa glanced at Chloe's flushed face out of the corner of her eye and sighed inwardly.
She had known Chloe for years but could never figure out what kind of guy Chloe liked. Chloe was the cherished youngest daughter, pampered by her family since childhood. Apart from the hardships she heard from Elsa, Chloe had never faced life's trials and tribulations.
Elsa always thought that if Chloe's family hadn't arranged a marriage for her, she would be drawn to someone romantic—someone who could play the guitar and take her to the beach on a summer night on a motorcycle.
But Jonathan was calm and wise, always in control, clearly not the romantic type.
Elsa was surprised by Chloe's reaction in front of Jonathan but didn't point it out. Jonathan naturally noticed as well.
Since Chloe didn't speak, he didn't start a conversation with her either.
After chatting for a while and seeing that Elsa was fine, Jonathan got up to leave.
Chloe's eyes dimmed for a moment.
"Ms. Clark, are you leaving? I can give you a ride," Jonathan suddenly turned and asked Chloe.
"Okay," Chloe's eyes lit up again.
Watching them leave, Elsa sighed deeply. 'Chloe, didn't you drive here?'
Elsa stayed in the hospital for a week. She wanted to give them both some time to cool off but couldn't come up with anything.
She struggled with sweet talk and found deep, face-to-face conversations equally challenging.
She felt that there was a deep rift between her and Luke over the past few months. Elsa wanted to mend things with Luke, but she was at a complete loss on how to proceed.
That night, Elsa woke up from a nightmare, sitting up abruptly.
A thin layer of sweat covered her back, and she looked around at the darkness, feeling lost.
Every time she woke up from a nightmare after getting married, it was Luke who held her and comforted her. And it had been a while since she last dreamed of Leslie.
In a way, Luke had healed her.
"Baby, don't be afraid." In the darkness, Luke's strong arms wrapped around her, and the familiar scent of orange blossoms filled her nose.
