Chapter 397 Unwillingness

Lara asked Elsa about her future plans and found out she was heading abroad for school right after New Year's. Lara then suggested, "Your place is tiny and it's just a rental. Why not move in with Grandma? Vincent can stay with me too, and I'll take good care of him."

Elsa, who cherished this newfound family bond and wanted to spend more time with Lara, nodded in agreement.

Vincent, already in love with the King family's atmosphere, was thrilled at the idea of living there.

"After I finish my SATs, I'll teach you how to swim," Eric said, putting his arm around Vincent's shoulder and making plans for the future.

Even though Lara had already instructed the servants to prepare rooms for the siblings, the family couldn't get enough of each other's company. They stayed up chatting until 11 PM, with no one willing to go to bed.

"It's like a blessing from above," Lara said, leaning on Elsa with a heart full of love. "At my age, having two such wonderful grandchildren is a miracle."

"And you're friends with Chloe. When she marries into the family, you two will get along great."

Hearing this, Elsa glanced at Jonathan to gauge his reaction. His expression remained unchanged, and he didn't say a word in protest.

Looks like Chloe's feelings weren't one-sided, Elsa thought.

"I hope I can call Chloe 'Aunt' one day," Elsa said with a smile.

Giselle, who had been holding back, couldn't help but ask, "Mr. King has a girlfriend? Since when?"

"Not long ago. You'll meet her soon," Jonathan replied, maintaining his composure and avoiding any mention of Chloe being just a casual partner.

Giselle's heart sank. This was a double blow at the end of her life. The doctor had said she might have a year left, maybe less. She couldn't bear the thought of dying in such a miserable state.

In a moment of solitude, a look of bitterness crossed Giselle's face.

The King family had found their long-lost relatives, and it was only natural to announce it to the world. Jonathan discussed hosting a party next week with everyone to share the good news.

Elsa wasn't interested in formalities but didn't want to reject Jonathan and Lara's kind intentions, so she had no objections.

The next day, Eric had school, and Vincent, being frail, needed rest. It was almost dawn when Jonathan finally persuaded everyone to go to bed.

Elsa took a moment to check her phone. She had sent a message canceling a late-night snack plan, and Luke had replied: [Okay.]

She felt she should share the news with Luke. After all, what was he to her? Boyfriend? They hadn't officially declared themselves as such.

Oh well, she thought, I should tell him anyway.

[Are you still awake?] she texted.

He replied instantly: [Yeah.]

[Wait for me.]

She put on her shoes and headed to Luke's place. It was less than 600 feet away, just a few minutes' walk.

Lara, still awake, was talking to Jonathan in the study. She saw Elsa running out through the window and asked, "Where's Elsa going so late?"

"Probably to see Luke," Jonathan replied with a smile, briefly explaining Elsa and Luke's complicated relationship.

"The Taylor family heir seems quite devoted to her," Lara remarked.

"Yeah, they're destined to be entangled for life," Jonathan said with a smile. "It would be painful for them to part."

"How fortunate to be troubled by love," Lara mused. "Most people are so consumed with making a living that they have no time for romance. Those who can afford to be distracted by love are the ones who lack for nothing else."

"And you and Chloe..." Lara began.

"Mom, it's hard to say. I feel protective of her," Jonathan replied.
