Chapter 76 Extracting Surplus Value

Elsa stayed in the hospital for quite a while due to this bout of pneumonia.

Elsa only had one dispute with Luke that day, trying to return the pink diamond bracelet to him. After that, she acted as if nothing had happened.

But Luke could sense a subtle difference in Elsa.

In the past, although they didn't have heart-to-heart talks, they were close. Now, Elsa seemed a bit more reserved and polite.

"What are you thinking?" Chloe asked when she visited Elsa in the hospital, peeling an apple by her bedside.

"If I didn't need anything from him, and he didn't trust me, this marriage would definitely be over. But now, I need something from him, so I can't let emotions get in the way. I'll just get through it," Elsa said honestly.

Growing up in such a family, Elsa never had much sense of security and was skeptical about love and marriage. During her time with Luke, she had slowly developed feelings for him. But now, faced with this situation, she was immediately brought back to reality.

"You must be very sad," Chloe said, cutting the apple into small pieces and feeding them to Elsa.

"It's nothing. I admit I had unrealistic fantasies about him before, but this incident has made me much more clear-headed. You know? He once held Margaret and cried all night before her wedding."

"Luke did something that dramatic?" Chloe was shocked.

"Ridiculous, right?" Elsa gave a bitter smile and continued, "I had the same reaction when I heard it."

"Anyway, I won't get emotionally involved anymore. I'll extract every bit of value from Luke without any guilt and leave as soon as I'm done."

"Right, a high-status family like the Taylor family isn't suitable for you. If it doesn't work out, you still have Jonny Jones! Although the Jones family is also wealthy, Jonny truly cares for you. He will protect you. After you got married, he drank himself to sleep every day and lost a lot of weight..."

Before she could finish, the door to the hospital room was forcefully pushed open by Luke.

"Ms. Clark, what are you trying to do by encouraging my wife to find another man?" Luke's voice was cold and his face was extremely grim.

Karida followed Luke in, holding a patient chart with amusement.

Chloe was not intimidated and said, "Mr. Taylor, if you considered her your wife, you wouldn't let others frame her! Oh, right, Ms. Collins couldn't possibly be an outsider. Ms. Collins is very good at pretending to be innocent and she's your first love."

"Chloe Clark, you're Elsa's friend, so I don't want to make things difficult for you."

Luke was trying hard to contain his anger, but Chloe wasn't afraid at all.

"You're so tough, why don't you throw me into that lousy lake of yours! Margaret must be really something. Who knows what kind of spell she put on you."

"Chloe, you should go home. We'll get together after I get out of the hospital," Elsa said.

Seeing the situation getting out of hand, Elsa quickly pulled Chloe out, whispering to her, "I can't divorce him right now, so stop arguing."

Chloe reluctantly left.

"When did you get here?" After Chloe left, Elsa asked  with guilty, unsure of how much Luke had heard.

"I heard everything I needed to hear," Luke didn't hide it.

"Sorry," Elsa lowered her head.

"Since I still have some value, Elsa Miller, you better please me and hold on tight to this big tree," Luke gave Elsa a deep look and then left.

"What does he mean?" Elsa asked Karida, watching Luke's tall figure.

Karida shrugged, "Who can understand a man in love? But he may be feeling heartbroken after hearing you say you'll never get emotionally involved with him again."

"What's there for him to be hurt about? He doesn't love me," Elsa said flatly, with no discernible emotion.

She had thought Margaret was truly in Luke's past, but this incident made Elsa realize that Margaret held a much more significant place in Luke's heart than she did.

'Who knows, maybe one day Luke will divorce me and go back to Margaret,' Elsa thought.
