Chapter 408 The Road is Obstructed and Long

As Elsa and Jonathan walked in, they found Karida holding Luke and Terry's hands together, the three men staring at each other so intensely that it was hard not to laugh.

Elsa cleared her throat, and the three men awkwardly let go.

"Thanks, Mr. Clark," Elsa said sincerely as she approached Terry's bed.

She had seen his medical report, and his injuries were far worse than she had imagined. Terry risking his life to save her was something Elsa hadn't expected.

"No need to thank me. I've done plenty to mess things up between you and Luke in the past. We're even now," Terry said casually.

Friends might not dwell on settling scores, but when it came to a friend's woman, it was a different story. Luke looked at Terry and suddenly laughed.

"Terry, you still love me."

"Of course, I treat you like my own son."

"Get lost, that's no way to talk to your father."

Their banter brought back the playful atmosphere of the past, and Karida breathed a sigh of relief.

Jonathan, being Elsa's elder, naturally took on a senior's role, thanking Terry and even leaving his contact information, promising to give the Clark family some projects from the Prosperous Abundance Group.

The King family's main influence wasn't in Maplewood City but in Lakeshire City, where they were major players. Terry getting Jonathan's support at this critical juncture for the Clark family was undoubtedly a good thing.

Everyone was happy for him, but Terry was the first to refuse, "No need, I didn't do this to curry favor."

Jonathan was taken aback by his response and explained, "I'm not one to mix business with personal matters, Mr. Clark. Rest assured, I won't turn a blind eye in business just because you saved Elsa."

"Mr. King, while I do want to take over soon, I'm not desperate enough to trade an arm for support," Terry stubbornly replied.

Jonathan wasn't one to back down either and retorted, "Mr. Clark, why avoid suspicion? Is the Clark family lacking in this regard?"

Seeing Jonathan's insistence, Terry relented, "Fine, let's discuss it after my skin graft surgery."

After chatting for a while, Chloe arrived.

Chloe had a notable trait: she spoke very little whenever Jonathan was around, and today was no exception.

Some people show off in front of those they like, while others feel inferior and wish to disappear. Chloe was the latter.

She didn't speak, just sat by Terry's bed with red eyes, staring at him until Terry couldn't stand it anymore and got up to wipe her tears.

"I'm not dead yet, Chloe. Are you so scared you can't even talk?"

Terry thought Chloe was frightened, but only Elsa knew the real reason.

Luke had heard from Elsa that Jonathan was interested in Chloe but didn't know the deeper details. Seeing Chloe's stark contrast to her usual sharp-tongued self, he sensed something was off.

They stayed with Terry from noon until evening, when Terry finally chased them out, claiming he needed to sleep.

Karida returned to the director's office, while the other four headed to the parking lot.

"Ms. Clark, did you drive?" Luke asked.

Chloe shook her head.

"Then I'll take my wife for a late-night snack. Could you, Uncle Jonathan, give Ms. Clark a ride home?" He had once seen Jonathan as a rival, but now he addressed him more naturally than Elsa did.

Elsa was surprised by Luke's audacity but quickly agreed with his wise decision, "Yes, we haven't eaten much all day, and now I'm hungry."

Jonathan nodded with a smile and naturally took Chloe's hand, "Let's go."

Luke raised an eyebrow. He intended to create an opportunity for them, but couldn't they at least pretend in front of him?

"Are they together?" Luke asked.

"Sort of," Elsa said as she got into Luke's car, finally relaxing after a tense day, leaning back lazily.

"The road is long and winding. I hope Mr. King and Ms. Clark have the same perseverance as we do," Luke said, not starting the car but lowering the window and lighting a cigarette.

"What?" Elsa didn't catch his words.

"Nothing," Luke said, exhaling a smoke ring.

The air around them felt off, not just because of his cigarette.

Suddenly, Luke's expression darkened. He grabbed Elsa's arm and, with a swift motion, pulled her out of the car from his side.
