Chapter 177 Turning the Tide

Vincent was stashed away by David in some house near the tourist traps of Azure Lake.

When Vincent came to, some dude lied, saying his sister wanted him to chill there. But when Elsa didn't show and David did, Vincent knew something was fishy.

Vincent had barely seen David before, but he clocked him right away as his father.

"David, you think you can use me to mess with Elsa? Not happening," Vincent said, kicking off a hunger strike.

David couldn't care less. He swung by once, and when the guards told him Vincent wasn't eating, he just shrugged, saying a few days without food wouldn't kill him.

By the time Luke and his crew found Vincent, thanks to Karen, Vincent was already wiped out.

"Luke," Vincent managed a weak smile before passing out.

David was MIA. Luke, all business, got Vincent to the hospital and nabbed the guards.

With Karen still in his grip, Luke wasn't sweating David's no-show.

Luke, tough as nails, had a busted left arm but kept it together. Before Elsa even woke up, Luke had already found her brother and flipped the script.

"In the end, I still had to step in. Didn't we agree you'd come to me first next time?" Luke muttered, giving Elsa's cheek a playful pinch when he got back to the hospital.

The next day, Debbie showed up to make nice with her son. Luke wasn't having it, so he had Karida deal with her.

Karida, a hit with the old folks, chatted with Debbie for over an hour, then politely saw her off before heading back to Luke's room.

"What did she say?" Luke asked as soon as Karida walked in.

Karida replied, "Debbie's stubborn. She said since you treat Elsa well, it's only fair Elsa doesn't screw you over. I tested her, and she kept saying she had nothing to do with Vincent's kidnapping. She brought it up before because she knew Elsa cared about Vincent. I don't think she's lying."

Debbie had used Vincent to push Elsa into a divorce, almost getting Luke killed. Realizing things were more tangled than she thought, Debbie rushed to the hospital, feeling guilty but too proud to apologize. Karida had helped her a lot.

Luke nodded. Knowing his mom, strict and bossy but not evil, he believed Debbie.

For Debbie to know about Vincent's kidnapping and use it against Elsa, she must've been played.

Debbie, a widow running the Taylor family biz for twenty years, was tough. Though old, she wasn't losing it. Her bias against Elsa showed she just didn't like her.

Luke's tense expression eased when he heard Elsa hadn't let his mom boss her around and had even written a note back.

"In rich families, women not liked by their mothers-in-law usually try hard to suck up. Elsa's different," Karida said, amused by Elsa's attitude.

Debbie, bossy all her life, was dealing with a rebellious junior for the first time, and her anger was understandable.

"She can be carefree because she doesn't want anything and has nothing to lose," Luke said calmly.

Elsa's goal in forcing Luke to marry her was to take him away from Karen, making the Miller family lose the Taylor family's support. She hadn't thought about life after that and didn't care.

Knowing this, Luke frequently found it hard to keep his anger in check towards her. However, her willingness to risk her life for him this time caught him off guard.
