Chapter 65 You Still Have Me
Valley of Hope Hospital.
When Luke and Elsa arrived, Vincent was already prepared for surgery and being wheeled into the operating room.
"Come on, a family member needs to sign. The sooner the heart transplant, the better," Karida approached, skipping the pleasantries and handing the surgical risk consent form to Elsa.
Elsa's hands were trembling so much that she couldn't read the form, let alone sign it. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself.
Luke placed his hand over hers, helping her complete the signature.
"It'll be alright. Don't worry," Luke said in a low voice.
"Okay," Elsa replied, her voice tinged with a nasal tone. She was so fragile that it made Luke's heart ache.
Vincent's surgery lasted over four hours. Elsa waited outside without moving for the entire time.
During that period, Luke couldn't stand it anymore and made Elsa sit on a chair outside the operating room. Then he gave her a cup of water.
"Vincent is my only family," Elsa suddenly said quietly around noon.
Seeing Elsa's sorrowful expression, Luke felt like his heart was stuffed with cotton. He wanted to say, "You still have me," but felt it might be overstepping. After much deliberation, he remained silent.
Luke couldn't help thinking that they had slept together countless times and were now married, yet when it came to expressing his feelings, Luke found himself hesitant. Their relationship was indeed rare in this world.
"If I lose him..."
"You won't!" Luke cut off Elsa's unfinished sentence.
'With Elsa's extreme personality, if anything happened to Vincent, she might resort to self-harm or suicide. I can't allow that to happen.' Luke thought.
"Vincent will definitely have a successful surgery. If anything goes wrong, I'll burn this hospital down!" Luke declared.
Karida, who happened to be passing by, shivered upon hearing this.
'Crazy! Is Luke even reasonable? It's unfortunate to have such a patient," Karida thought to herself.
"Don't worry, we've done many surgeries like this at our hospital. Everything will be fine," Karida quickly reassured Elsa, who looked pale.
Fortunately, the surgery went smoothly. By 1 PM, Vincent was wheeled out of the operating room.
Vincent was still under anesthesia and unconscious.
Elsa rushed over, following the medical staff as they transferred Vincent to the ICU.
"He'll be observed in the ICU for a week to monitor for any rejection reactions. There shouldn't be any problems," Karida said after consulting with the lead surgeon.
"Okay," Elsa exhaled deeply, her tense nerves finally relaxing. Then she collapsed into Luke's arms.
Family members weren't allowed to visit the ICU, but Luke and Elsa stayed at the hospital until evening before taking a car back home.
"Luke, thank you," Elsa said on the way back, resting her head on Luke's lap. She felt a warm sensation in her heart, and her voice softened considerably.
Today, Luke didn't seem like the high-and-mighty richest man in Maplewood City or a business tycoon. Instead, he felt like an ordinary husband, providing her with the most comforting companionship and support.
"You still have me," Luke finally couldn't hold it anymore.
"What?" Elsa looked at Luke.
"Vincent Miller isn't your only family in this world. I'm your husband and I'm also your family." Luke's voice was steady. His expression was a bit awkward, but he managed to say bluntly what had been on his mind all day.
"Of course, I know. I didn't articulate my thoughts properly earlier. Vincent is my only blood-related family, and you are my husband," Elsa said after a moment. When realizing that Luke was upset about her earlier words, she quickly tried to comfort him.
"Good to know," Luke said, lifting his chin proudly.
