Chapter 73 Return to Owner

Luke escorted Nathan to Elsa's hospital room door.

"Go on, spending some time with your sister-in-law. She's not in a good mood, so be good," Luke said, patting Nathan on the head.

"Don't worry, I'm always gentle with beautiful ladies!" Nathan assured, thumping his chest earnestly, "Aren't you coming in, bro?"

Luke shook his head because he had more pressing matters to attend to.

Luke sat in the hospital lobby, about to call Max, when a Facebook message came through first.

[Mr. Taylor, there might be some misunderstanding regarding Ms. Collins and Mrs. Taylor falling into the water.]

The Taylor family estate was crowded and there were surveillance cameras installed in almost every corner.

Margaret who was familiar with the layout of the Taylor family estate, deliberately chose a blind spot to jump into the lake.

However, Margaret didn't know that the surveillance system had been updated in the years when she was abroad, and the scene was captured by a camera in the corner.

Debbie had created an opportunity for Margaret to confront Elsa, but she didn't know Margaret would do such a thing.

When Max wanted to see the footage, Debbie thought it might make Luke give up on Elsa, so she had the security personnel show it to him, but she was only shocked by the truth.

The video Max sent had unclear audio. But when Luke turned up the volume to the maximum, he could still faintly hear Elsa and Margaret talking.

When Margaret jumped into the lake, Luke could see a moment of confusion on Elsa's face in the blurry footage. Then he saw Elsa turn and jump into the lake as well.

Then Nathan came running, crying and calling for help.

Luke thought, 'There can only be one reason Elsa jumped into the lake. she was afraid that if Margaret was in the water and she was on the shore, she wouldn't be able to explain herself and no one would believe her!

'To avoid being falsely accused, Elsa almost paid with her life, but I didn't even give her a chance to explain.'

Debbie's special invitation to Elsa and her effort to get Luke out of the way was now clear.

Luke's heart ached suddenly.

"Luke, listen to me. I didn't know Margaret would be so foolish. I've already scolded her," Debbie called, her tone carrying a rare hint of shame.

"Mother, Elsa is my wife. I don't expect you to treat her as well as you treat me, but if you keep bullying her, we will never come home again."

Luke's voice was tired and hoarse. He never thought his usually upright mother, Debbie, would do such a thing.

"I didn't mean for it to happen."

Whatever Debbie said next, Luke couldn't hear anymore.

When he returned to the room, Elsa was leaning against the headboard, getting an IV drip. Her face was pale, her eyes slightly downcast, lost in thought. Nathan sat obediently beside her, enjoying the chicken soup Lisa had made for Elsa.

Luke's heart ached with a swelling pain as he sat down by Elsa's bed.

Elsa acted as if she didn't see Luke, not even lifting her eyelids.

"You're letting Nathan have your dinner. What do you want to eat?" Luke asked after a long, awkward silence.

Elsa hadn't had time to eat lunch, and now her dinner had gone to Nathan.

"Nothing," Elsa replied flatly, her eyes briefly meeting Luke's before quickly looking away, staring at the IV bottle.

Luke suddenly felt a bit irritated.

"I watched the surveillance footage. Margaret was wrong, but you shouldn't play with your life," Luke said, feeling his words were too light.

Then he continued, "I'll talk to Margaret and make her apologize to you."

"No need."

"Be good. Go tell the nurse to change my IV," Elsa said to Nathan, when seeing the IV bottle was almost empty.

"Okay!" Nathan responded cheerfully and ran off.

Only then did Elsa take out the pink diamond bracelet from under her pillow with one hand.

"Here, the party is over. I'd like to return it to its rightful owner."
