Chapter 391 Suspicion

Lara and Giselle chatted for a while longer, mostly exchanging well-wishes and telling each other to take care.

Despite not being related by blood, the bond between the two was clearly strong and deep.

After hanging up, Lara turned to Elsa with an apologetic smile. "Giselle's health isn't great, and I didn't want her to worry, so I said what I did. Hope you don't mind?"

Elsa shook her head. "It's fine."

It made sense. As someone new in Lara's life, she couldn't compete with the deep bond of a grandparent and grandchild. Besides, she had no intention of vying for Giselle's place in Lara's heart.

"Giselle's had a tough life. Her grandmother and I were close friends, but after a car accident took her family, she was left alone. I took her in and raised her."

"She's a good kid, always treating me like a benefactor and being incredibly considerate. With Jonathan busy with work these past few years, I've been grateful for her company. Unfortunately, her health has deteriorated, and last year she was diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer."

Lara's voice choked up, and her eyes reddened. Elsa felt a pang of sympathy.

There were so many people with hard lives. Compared to Giselle, Elsa's situation seemed less dire and more deserving of empathy.

On Saturday, Lara accompanied Elsa to the care facility to visit Vincent as promised.

Lara couldn't get enough of Vincent, holding his face and looking at him with endless affection.

As Elsa had anticipated, Vincent felt an immediate connection with Lara, just as he had with Jonathan and his son.

"What grade is Vincent in?" Lara asked, surprised to learn that Vincent had never attended school.

"When he gets out, he can stay at Grandma's house. It's bigger," she suggested.

"That's too much trouble. Vincent can stay with me," Elsa quickly interjected.

"Trouble? I have so many staff, and I spend over a million dollars a year on them. They can't even take care of one person?"

What Elsa thought was just polite conversation turned out to be a serious offer, leaving her stunned.

Later, when she visited Leslie's grave, she encountered something even more surprising.

Leslie's grave was adorned with an array of food and offerings, filling the stone table.

Luke usually only placed flowers, never offerings. When did he become so traditional?

She asked the cemetery caretaker, who said, "A very elegant lady came by. She not only left these offerings but also cleaned the grave."

Elsa asked for a detailed description of the lady and confirmed it was Lara.

Lara had made a special trip to pay her respects to Leslie.

If Lara did all this just because Leslie resembled her, it seemed overly meticulous. Coupled with everything Lara had done since seeing Leslie's photo, Elsa found it all very suspicious.

The feeling she had the first time she visited the King Villa resurfaced, and an answer seemed to be forming in her mind.

"Mom, are you connected to the King family?" she whispered, her hand trembling as she touched Leslie's photo.

The photo felt damp and cold.

Leslie's background had always been a mystery. If she was indeed connected to the King family, why had they kept it a secret? What were they hiding?

Even after returning home, Elsa's mind was consumed with these thoughts.

"Chloe, I need a favor. I need a DNA sample for a paternity test," she said late that night, calling Chloe and making sure she was alone.

"What?"

"Chloe, I think my mom might be part of the King family." Elsa explained everything in detail, laying out her suspicions to prevent Chloe from thinking she was crazy.

"Honestly, even if you hadn't explained so much, I would still help you," Chloe replied.
