Chapter 410 Chloe Lost, Lost Completely

Jonathan had already loosened his tie and unbuttoned his shirt when he heard those words, and the desire on his face quickly faded.

He let go of Chloe, apologizing as he straightened his clothes, "You should rest. I need to go to the hospital."

It wasn't uncommon for him to leave right after being intimate, but this was the first time he had to pause in such a situation.

At that moment, Chloe's flushed face turned pale, and her heart felt like a hot iron plate suddenly doused with cold water, emitting black smoke.

"I'll go with you," she said immediately, without thinking.

Chloe was usually indecisive in front of Jonathan, and this was the first time she made such a request. Jonathan had no reason to refuse.

So, in the early hours at the hospital, Chloe met Giselle for the first time.

When Chloe and Jonathan arrived, Giselle was already awake. She sat on the hospital bed, hugging her knees, looking so forlorn and exhausted that it was heartbreaking.

Seeing Jonathan and Chloe enter, a flash of grievance crossed Giselle's face before she forced a smile and said, "This must be Ms. Clark. I'm sorry to trouble you to come see me so late."

Chloe had seen her share of delicate women, like Margaret, who was skilled at using tears to evoke a man's protective instincts. But seeing Giselle, she suddenly understood what a true master looked like.

Sometimes, holding back tears and grievances was more powerful than crying dramatically.

For instance, Jonathan immediately sat by Giselle's bedside, asking eagerly, "What happened? You fainted again? What did the doctor say?"

"It's nothing. Cancer patients often have complications in the later stages. Don't be too surprised or overly worried," Giselle quickly reassured him with a smile.

She's a cancer patient? Chloe was shocked.

Though she and Elsa shared everything, neither was interested in gossip or others' private matters. Elsa had never mentioned Giselle's illness to Chloe, and Chloe only learned about Giselle's existence today. Recalling when she first met Lara, who explained her absence in Maplewood City in spring due to "Giselle being sick," Chloe suddenly realized Giselle's identity.

Giselle was Lara's goddaughter, making her Jonathan's junior, but the way she looked at Jonathan... Chloe thought about it. That wasn't how a junior should look at an elder.

Others smiled, but Giselle's smile felt like she was forcing herself to smile to keep Jonathan from worrying too much.

"Nonsense, the doctor clearly said you fainted because of excessive worry, beyond your limits. Giselle, you're just too kind," Lara suddenly started crying.

Seeing Lara cry, Giselle reached out to hug her.

"Doctors like to exaggerate. Today was Elsa and Vincent's family reunion, and I caused a fuss over my lost earrings. It was wrong of me, and I should feel guilty. I shouldn't have been so thoughtless, almost causing trouble for Elsa," her voice grew infinitely somber.

"Grandma, if I die and have harmed your beloved granddaughter, I would die with regrets. But those earrings..." She looked deeply at Jonathan and abruptly fell silent.

Those earrings were a gift from Jonathan? Chloe felt she understood the underlying message.

Chloe's heart ached, and she took a deep breath. Chloe, she's a cancer patient. You couldn't be so petty, she reminded herself.

But Lara didn't catch the hidden meaning. She was someone who responded more to softness than hardness, and Giselle's words only made her feel more heartbroken.

"Silly child, do you think that because I have Elsa as a granddaughter, I don't care about you anymore? That's not true. No one can replace you in my heart," Lara said, hugging her back.

"If the earrings are lost, I'll get you another pair. Your health is your own, and if it's ruined, nothing else matters. No one ever blamed you for this, so why are you so troubled?" Jonathan sighed, frowning.

The tenderness in his eyes was too much, and Chloe found it unbearable.

Chloe felt she had lost, completely and utterly.
