Chapter 8 Vincent's Situation Isn't Good

Luke and the Miller family's engagement was said to have been arranged back when Rhys from the Taylor family was alive. Luke and Karen had only been dating for a few months. He was indifferent by nature and viewed romance with indifference since he had never had a woman he fancied. For him, whether he married Karen or another heiress from a wealthy family, there wasn't much of a difference in nature. Karen was a pianist with a respectable status who was also gentle, cultured, and somewhat suitable for Luke's status.

"Why do we need to go to the hospital?" Luke asked absentmindedly. "I've been practicing the piano a lot recently, and my hands are a bit sore. It may be inflammation," Karen said, extending her fair hand to Luke. "Would you accompany me to the hospital to get them checked?" After finishing Elsa's call, Karen felt uneasy and knew she had to find a way to persuade Luke to get married quickly. That's why she came to Luke's company. The inflammation was just a temporary excuse.

He noticed that Karen had a pair of beautiful hands that hadn't done any hard labor, and if she played the piano for a long time, it could possibly cause pain. Luke stared at these hands, involuntarily recalling another hand that held cigarettes, chips, and ashtrays to fight with others desperately. Both of them were surnamed Miller, but they were quite different. However, since Elsa could study abroad, she must have had a good life for a few years. Now, when he thought that Elsa was working at a club selling beverages, he could not help but sigh that life was changeable. Something occurred to him. ‘Why do I keep thinking about this scheming woman today?’ Luke pushed the thought of that woman out of his mind, regained his composure, and smiled. "Sure."

Karen's hand was fine, but the doctor prescribed some medication for her. Just as they exited the orthopedic department, they ran into Elsa coming out of the adjacent gynecology department. Unlike her usual seductive image in front of Luke, she was wearing sneakers, sweatpants, and an oversized white T-shirt. The clothes hung loosely on her, accentuating her frailty. Even though most of her face was covered by a mask, Luke still recognized her. Elsa didn't expect to encounter them here. She glanced at Luke, seemingly wanting to say something, but her expression turned cold the moment she saw Karen by his side. Luke noticed her change and felt inexplicably irritated. Standing with his fiancée in front of Elsa, he felt a sense of guilt as if caught in an affair.
He thought, ‘What is this woman doing suddenly in the gynecology department? What is with that look in her eyes? Why does she pretend not to know me?’ As they passed each other, all his attention was on Elsa, and he didn't notice Karen's unpleasant expression.

"Luke, let's go pick out wedding dresses this afternoon." Karen raised her voice, catching his attention and making sure Elsa heard it, too. Elsa walked away as if she hadn't heard anything, not even sparing a glance for the two.
That evening, a nurse from the hospital called. "Elsa, please come over quickly. Vincent's condition is very bad." Elsa was shocked. Regardless of her injuries, she took a taxi and rushed to the hospital. In the ward, Vincent was already on a ventilator with a pale face and cold sweat on his forehead.
When he saw Elsa approaching, his eyes moved rapidly as if he had something to tell her. "What's wrong?" She rushed over and held Vincent's hand. "Don't be afraid, Vincent. I'm here."
"This afternoon, a lady came to visit Vincent. After she left, Vincent started complaining of chest pain. The doctor said it's premature ventricular contractions and angina," a nurse said.
"I'll check the surveillance footage." Elsa had already guessed what had happened to him. In the footage, Karen was angrily saying something at Vincent's bedside.
She couldn't hear the words, but Karen's expression suggested that she was overflowing with malice. She must have said something extremely hurtful to trigger Vincent's premature ventricular contractions.
Elsa sat by the bed, keeping vigil until dawn when Vincent finally stabilized. "Sis, let's not seek revenge. Can we leave Maplewood City?" Vincent, pale-faced, hugged Elsa tightly.
"Don't be afraid, Vincent. What did she say to you?" Elsa comforted Vincent, patting his back with deep concern. "Karen said she wants everyone in the city to know you're a shameless woman. She wants to ruin your reputation."
‘Ruining my reputation? What does my reputation matter to her?’ She comforted Vincent for a long time. That done, she told the nurse not to allow anyone to have a visit without her permission. When she returned from the hospital, it was close to noon.
On the way back, she suppressed her emotions and called Chloe. "Karen went to see Vincent yesterday."
"How are you two now, Elsa?" Chloe was flustered.
"I'm okay. Chloe, do you have any friends in the media?" She couldn't wait any longer.
Chloe fell into a long silence, only speaking after a while, "Elsa, you need to think about it carefully. Once you take this step, there's no turning back."

Elsa thought, ‘Turning back? Since my mother's suicide and my return, I have never thought about turning back.’
