Chapter 456 Wearing Formal Attire
Chloe was on the verge of tears. After dinner, she couldn't help but call Elsa to vent.
"What do you think your uncle is trying to do? Is leaving me really that painful for him?" She didn't believe for a second that Jonathan's business dealings with her parents were just a coincidence!
"Not sure, but I always feel like when uncle says he doesn't love you, he's just being stubborn." Elsa didn't have much relationship experience, and she'd always been straightforward, so she couldn't quite figure out what Jonathan meant either.
She always felt that Jonathan did love Chloe, but since it concerned Chloe and Jonathan's future happiness, she didn't dare read too much into it.
"You're right. What's the point of asking you? You've never even had a proper relationship." Chloe sighed.
Elsa laughed, "Who says? I'm dating my ex-husband right now."
After everything she and Luke had been through, they'd entered a rare phase where their hearts were truly in sync, and every day felt sweet.
Margaret was locked up in a public psychiatric hospital, and Karen, after that chance encounter at the exhibition, hadn't shown up at all. Elsa knew she couldn't possibly let things go just like that, so naturally she stayed on guard.
As for Giselle, ever since being threatened by Elsa at the hospital that day, she'd become much more restrained. She used to give Elsa the feeling of being outwardly obedient but secretly stirring up trouble, but now she was genuinely keeping a low profile.
If only she'd known Giselle was all bark and no bite, she should have scared her earlier—it wouldn't have caused her and Chloe so much grief. Elsa thought helplessly.
But Giselle's health really did seem to be failing. She'd recently started wearing hats when going out, as most of her hair had fallen out.
Lara put on a brave face every day. Seeing Giselle suffer made Elsa feel sad too, and sometimes when she remembered the things she'd said to Giselle, she felt guilty.
As Giselle approached the end of her life, it was a big deal for everyone in the King family. Though they seemed calm on the surface, everyone was churning inside.
Even Jonathan was making an effort to talk more with Giselle, bringing her a small gift every day.
......
Time flew by, and soon it was Chloe's grandfather's birthday. Elsa was on good terms with the Clark family, so naturally, she had to go. She'd prepared herself for Jonathan to come along too, but when she saw Jonathan with his hair slicked back, wearing an Italian haute couture suit, with an exaggerated double Windsor knot tie and a pocket square, she was still shocked.
Someone of Jonathan's status rarely needed to dress so formally. He could show up at any high-end event in casual wear and be treated as an honored guest—that was doing the host a favor. Who would dare require him to wear formal attire?
For relatively grand occasions, he'd throw on a casual suit jacket, and that would be enough. Today's level of formality was truly rare.
"Uncle, this is probably what you'd wear to meet the President, right?" Elsa couldn't help but comment.
"No, the President isn't worth me wearing a double Windsor knot." Jonathan was stating a fact.
"So clearly Chloe's grandfather really matters to you."
"Of course." After all, he's Chloe's grandfather, Jonathan thought.
According to Maplewood City customs, milestone birthdays for elderly people were celebrated more grandly, while other birthday banquets were just small gatherings with family and close friends.
Chloe's grandfather's birthday this time was his 76th, and according to his wishes, it wasn't being held particularly grandly.
So when Jonathan showed up in his formal suit, it actually made the Clark family a bit nervous, worried they might not host him properly.
"Why is Jonathan dressed like he's getting married?" Chloe complained to Elsa.
"He probably wouldn't even dress like this for his own wedding." Elsa rolled her eyes too.
