Chapter 402 Visit (Part 2)
"Grandma's got a good eye," Luke said, holding the gemstone up for Lara to see.
"This gem's from a crown."
"It was auctioned off for over 60 million dollars 13 years ago," Lara chimed in.
"To remember something from so long ago, it seems our Taylor family took a treasure from you," Luke's smile grew wider.
Last night, the sudden news of Elsa's family reunion had led to a rushed investigation. Max had discovered that Lara had a passion for collecting antique jewelry.
When Luke was preparing the gift, he remembered that he had previously taken a jewelry box from Debbie for Elsa, and Elsa had shown particular interest in the gemstones inside. He thought that if Elsa liked them, maybe Lara would too.
Today, he chose the largest gemstone from his collection, taking a gamble, and it paid off.
Lara remembered the year and the price, showing how much she liked the gemstone.
"You sly dog, you know how to cater to someone's tastes to win back your wife," Lara said, playing with the gemstone in one hand and flicking Luke's forehead with the other, unable to suppress her laughter.
"Not at all, I still need to win my wife back myself. I'm here to see you because you're Elsa's family. In the past, we didn't know about this connection, so it was fine not to visit. Now that we know, of course, we should be closer," Luke said.
He came partly out of respect, wanting Elsa's family to know about him, and partly to assess what kind of person Elsa's grandmother was, to ensure that the woman he cherished wouldn't be mistreated if she moved in.
Lara, being smart, understood this.
"Now that you've seen me, are you more at ease? You rascal, do you think I can't take care of my granddaughter as well as you can?" Lara said, rolling her eyes while holding the gemstone.
She didn't seem like an elderly person, especially not like the matriarch of a wealthy family. She gave off the impression of someone with a lifespan of several hundred years, with her 70-year-old self just in the prime of life.
Of course, Lara didn't see it that way. She always played the elder card with Luke, calling him "kid."
Luke thought of his own 50-year-old Debbie, who always tried to maintain a dignified and graceful demeanor, and found Elsa's grandmother to be quite a character.
He didn't directly answer Lara's question but said, "Fate is truly amazing. Elsa didn't know you for the first twenty years of her life, yet she shares your passion for jewelry. Seeing you, I can imagine what she'll look like when she's older, and I'm looking forward to it."
"Always saying things to make people happy," Lara said, rolling her eyes again and stretching lazily as she stood up.
"I've been sitting here waiting for you all morning, and my back is sore. I won't keep you for lunch."
"Alright," Luke said, understanding, and stood up to leave.
"Come back for dinner with my precious granddaughter tonight, okay?"
"Of course," Luke replied, his face calm but his eyes unable to hide his joy.
Lara nodded at him and walked away, holding her gemstone with a spring in her step.
Both of them had come to assess each other today. Lara found Luke to be a man of great presence and sincerity regarding Elsa, which pleased her.
Luke came to see Lara because he knew that, despite Elsa's tough exterior, she deeply longed for family. He was worried that this suddenly appearing grandmother might be unreasonable, accepting Elsa but not treating her well, or trying to impose strict rules on her, causing Elsa to suffer for the sake of newfound affection.
But now it seemed that Lara wasn't the type to impose rules and control people, which put his mind at ease.
Meanwhile, Elsa had no idea that Luke had gone to the King Villa. She had just arrived at the office that morning when she received some bad news.
