Chapter 412 Thank with Action
Luke's Cullinan had been bulletproofed, so the damage wasn't too bad. Even if they had been in the car at the time, they might have been fine.
But when he sensed something was wrong, Luke's first reaction was to protect her, and that genuinely moved her.
It wasn't surprising; she knew Luke would protect her first in a dangerous situation, yet she was still deeply touched, feeling her love for him grow.
Having faced danger twice in one day, Elsa knew this couldn't just be Margaret losing her mind.
Given Margaret's current state, she might have managed to buy acid and storm into the hotel venue, but planting homemade explosives under Luke's car was clearly beyond her capabilities.
Elsa felt her guess was pretty accurate—Karen must have returned.
Karen might even be hiding somewhere, watching her, ready to strike at any moment.
But she could put that aside for now; there was something else she cared about more at the moment.
"Why are you here to pick up the car at this hour?"
Chloe's expression didn't change. "I need it tomorrow, so I'm taking it home."
Elsa walked over to Chloe. "Why not have the driver pick it up? Shouldn't you be with Uncle Jonathan right now?"
"Ugh, I'm just trying to save the $30 parking fee, okay?" Chloe felt uneasy under Elsa's gaze and tried to dodge the question.
"What, did the Clark family go bankrupt? When did that happen?" Elsa sneered. "Chloe, am I not your best friend anymore?"
Seeing Elsa was upset, Chloe lowered her eyes. "Of course you are, you'll always be my best friend. As for what's going on, it's hard to explain right now. I'll tell you tomorrow, okay? Come find me tomorrow afternoon."
Chloe drove off.
Elsa got into the car with Luke.
The driver started the car, and they sat in the back, Elsa staring blankly at the tail of Chloe's Tesla.
"At this hour, it's strange she's not with Uncle Jonathan."
"Isn't it normal for couples to argue?" Luke pulled her into his arms, gently ruffling her fluffy hair. "We still have a while before we get home. Do you want to take a nap?"
"No, Chloe wouldn't argue with Uncle Jonathan. You don't understand her. When she likes someone, she lowers herself completely."
"Like a flower blooming from the dust?"
So Luke had read that book too.
Elsa looked at him with teary eyes. "Yes."
"It's strange, isn't it? Chloe, such a privileged girl, is twenty years younger than Uncle Jonathan. Outsiders would think Uncle Jonathan is the one reaching up, but in front of him, she's very insecure and cautious. I don't get it," Elsa added.
Luke patted her back, like soothing a child to sleep.
"It's normal. Love is love because it can't be measured by worldly standards. Even the best people have those who don't like them, and even the worst people have those who love them."
"Some people try to show off in front of the ones they like, while others are overly cautious. It's all a form of insecurity. Who can be their true self in front of the one they love? Essentially, everyone adapts to fit their partner."
"And you?" Elsa couldn't help but ask after hearing Luke's explanation.
Would he change himself for the one he loved?
"What do you think?"
Luke frowned at her question.
He cupped Elsa's chin, making her look into his eyes.
Since they met, hadn't she repeatedly tested his limits with her actions?
Hadn't he made enough concessions for her?
Without her, Luke could be out saving the world, but now, he just wanted to be a regular husband.
Elsa suddenly smiled. "I think you do."
She leaned in to kiss his brow, then rested her head in the crook of his neck.
"Thank you."
Elsa's voice was thick with emotion, her eyes even more misty.
"Show me with actions."
Luke's eyes darkened as he grabbed the back of her head, sealing her lips with a kiss he'd been longing for all day.
