Chapter 416 Role Reversal
The conch shell was vibrant and colorful, not your typical variety.
Jonathan opened the comments section.
"Is this a Queen Conch? It's gorgeous."
"You're so punk, I love it."
"Why did you get it tattooed here? Is it covering a scar?"
Chloe replied to this comment with a simple "Yes."
Jonathan saved the picture and zoomed in.
It was a nasty scar, mostly covered by the tattoo artist's skillful work. The raised flesh looked like it formed a name.
Was this why she always covered her arm? Jonathan frowned, remembering clearly that the first time they were in the car together, her arm was clean.
When Jonathan checked the comments again, there was one from the tattoo studio.
"Thank you, Chloe, for liking our work."
The tattoo shop's profile had a phone number and address. Jonathan took a screenshot and sent it to his assistant.
"Find out what Chloe's tattoo is covering."
It was strange. When they were together, he didn't care about these things. His occasional tenderness and attention were just out of guilt.
Now that they were apart, Jonathan found himself wanting to know more about Chloe. What did she say to the ocean that day? What was the tattoo covering?
What difference would it make? Probably none, but he just wanted to know.
Chloe's release was genuine; she didn't ask the tattoo artist to keep strict confidentiality. Jonathan's assistant spent a little money to get a small tattoo and got the information.
He wasn't being overly sentimental; it was indeed the word "King."
Jonathan zoomed in on the picture and looked at it repeatedly.
His heart felt like it had been hit hard with a blunt object, suddenly deflating, leaving him breathless and in pain.
Chloe, who was always so quiet and reserved in front of him, had done this to herself in private. He hadn't expected it.
What had he done to deserve such a place in a girl's heart, to be etched onto her skin?
Jonathan instinctively dialed her number.
"Mr. King."
Her tone was light, like an old friend who hadn't been in touch for a while. Jonathan's heart tightened.
He called, but what was he supposed to say?
"Family dinner this weekend, my mother asked me to invite you," Jonathan lied.
He could hear the polite smile in her voice: "Thank you for Mrs. King's kind invitation, but I have an event at the club this weekend and can't make it. I'll make it up to her another day."
As courteous and formal as could be.
Jonathan paused for a moment. "Alright."
Now the roles were reversed, and he was the one left speechless.
Chloe was having coffee with Elsa when she took the call.
"Who was that?" Elsa asked.
"Jonathan, saying you guys have a family dinner on Sunday, and Mrs. King invited me." Chloe's expression remained unchanged as she tossed her phone aside.
"How come I didn't know about this?" Elsa pouted. "I think he just wanted an excuse to call you."
"So?"
"So maybe he doesn't treat you any differently than other women."
Chloe took a sip of her coffee, showing a disdainful look. "I used to give him my body for free, asking for neither money nor love. Now that I'm not giving it to him anymore, a man losing a free sex partner, even without feelings, would feel some regret. That's his mindset now. You should know, a man's heart and body are two different things."
Elsa was stunned by Chloe's words, her eyes wide with surprise. After a long pause, she asked, "Is that how you always thought about it?"
