Chapter 344 Misunderstanding
Luke woke up in the middle of the night.
"Luke, how are you? I was so worried about you," Hailey rushed over immediately, clinging to his arm.
Luke, annoyed by her, frowned deeply.
"How's Elsa?" He had collapsed only after ensuring she was out of danger, and now that he was awake, she was his first concern.
"She's fine," Karida said, exchanging a glance with Terry.
Terry got the hint and said to Hailey, "Ms. Phillips, Luke is awake now. You can relax and go get some rest."
"No, I want to stay with him!" Hailey pouted.
"I don't need anyone to stay with me. You all can go," Luke said indifferently, his face expressionless.
Hailey didn't dare push it further. After a bit more fussing, she saw that Luke wasn't paying her any attention, staring off into space, and felt awkward.
"Let's go. We'll come back to see Luke tomorrow."
"Yes, Ms. Phillips, you've had a long day. You should rest too."
Karida and Terry tried to smooth things over. Hailey, feeling helpless, reluctantly left with them.
After they left, Luke wasted no time. Despite his discomfort, he went straight to Elsa's hospital room.
Coincidentally, he overheard a conversation between her and Leo.
To Elsa, it was just a joke, but to Luke, it was blatant seduction!
His woman, knowing he had fallen ill because of her, was in the same room with Leo late at night, flirting with him!
He never liked moral coercion and never intended to use his actions to control her, but what she did broke his heart.
His already troubled heart felt even worse. Luke kicked Elsa's door hard and turned to walk back to his room.
The loud noise startled Elsa.
"What happened?" She went to check and only saw Luke's back.
Luke was awake! That was good. But he must have misunderstood. Elsa bit her lip, feeling a bit helpless.
"I'll go check on Luke and be right back," she said to Leo, taking a deep breath and following Luke to his room.
Hailey wasn't there, thankfully. Otherwise, it would have been awkward after just being scolded.
"You're awake. How are you? Is your heart still uncomfortable?" She stood at the door, looking at Luke lying back on the bed, her face showing obvious concern.
"Ms. Miller, instead of staying with your boss, you take the time to check on your ex-husband. How kind of you. I won't die," Luke sneered, his eyes full of disdain.
Elsa felt uneasy. Her joke earlier had indeed gone too far.
"Leo and I aren't like that. I was just joking," she explained, somewhat lacking confidence.
"You act all proper, but you're quite loose in private. If I hadn't kicked that door, would you already be in bed with Leo?" Luke's eyes were full of burning anger, making Elsa's heart race.
Elsa wanted to say that both she and Leo were single, and even if something did happen, it was none of Luke's business. But he had just saved her life and developed myocarditis because of her, so she couldn't say it.
Hailey's earlier taunts and harsh words didn't sting as much as Luke's one sentence.
"I told you, Leo and I were just joking. Nothing happened. Thank you for saving me. If you don't want to see me, I'll leave," she said, suppressing her anger and pain, trying to keep her tone calm and rational.
"You're in such a hurry to leave because Leo is waiting in the room!" Luke was particularly irrational tonight, his tone harsh.
Elsa's face turned pale. Luke was sick, and she didn't want to argue with him.
"Say what you want," she said, taking a deep breath and turning to leave.
Luke grabbed something from the bedside table and threw it to the ground. "Elsa, if you dare go back and sleep in the same room as Leo, I'll ruin you!"
Elsa turned back. The item he had thrown was a thermos she had bought, and the porridge she had painstakingly made spilled all over the floor.
Her heart ached, but she smiled instead. "Luke, you saved my life, and I'm grateful. But Leo and I, even if we did have a sexual relationship, so what? What are you to me? What right do you have to treat me like this?"
She shouldn't cry, but as she spoke, Elsa felt wronged, and tears welled up in her eyes, no matter how hard she tried to hold them back.
"What are we? Let me tell you what we are!" Luke pulled Elsa over forcefully and pressed her down beneath him.
