Chapter 427 Idle Talk
Giselle's discharge from the hospital was a big deal for the King family.
Lara had the servants hang banners in the yard, blow up a ton of balloons, and even bought 9,999 super expensive winter flowers, to place in the center of the yard.
Elsa was floored when she got home that evening. The setup was so over-the-top, it was almost fancier than her own recognition banquet.
What was going on? Were they welcoming a princess?
Even she, the biological granddaughter, didn't get this kind of treatment.
She carefully stepped around the flower petals and walked inside, only to find the family enjoying a warm, happy moment together.
"Elsa's back! Go wash your hands and join us for dinner," Giselle greeted her enthusiastically.
Giselle was the one who had driven a wedge between Chloe and Jonathan, so Elsa found it hard to be objective about her. She managed a forced smile.
At the dinner table, Lara, maybe worried that Elsa might overthink things, served her food more frequently than usual.
Elsa was a quiet person who kept her thoughts to herself, so she handled it gracefully.
When they were alone, Lara seized the opportunity to explain, "Giselle is in the late stages of cancer. I want her to be happy in her final days."
Elsa nodded, "That's only right."
"Elsa, you're always so understanding," Lara said, feeling a bit embarrassed. Her actions were indeed biased.
But for Elsa, this family bond was a blessing from above. Even if she received less, it was still a great happiness. Despite feeling a bit uncomfortable, she knew she shouldn't compete.
While Elsa thought this way, Giselle had a different perspective.
That night, Elsa went downstairs to visit Luke and happened to overhear Giselle and Jonathan talking in the living room.
"I bought two gifts. Could you please give them to Elsa and Chloe tomorrow?" Giselle said.
Elsa looked over and saw Giselle standing in front of Jonathan, wearing a loose-fitting outfit with her hair down.
The oversized clothes made her thin arms and legs look even more fragile and pitiful.
"Why don't you give them to her yourself?" Jonathan asked, looking up from his newspaper.
"Better not. Elsa seems to have some resistance towards me," Giselle hesitated.
Elsa was exasperated. Resistance towards her? What had she said or done?
"What's going on?" Jonathan asked.
Giselle sighed and sat down next to Jonathan.
"I don't know if it's just my imagination, but I always feel like Elsa has some hostility towards me. She must be feeling unbalanced seeing you and Mrs. King treat me so well. And Elsa probably thinks your separation from Ms. Clark is related to me."
No wonder Chloe said Giselle was a master manipulator.
Elsa stood on the stairs, her mind racing.
This was hard to argue against. If she hadn't heard it herself, Giselle's victim persona would have been firmly established!
Without doing anything, she had become the spoiled, bullying biological granddaughter!
"Ms. Montague, they say if you haven't done anything wrong, you have nothing to fear. You're so nervous, you're making me wonder if I've bullied you," Elsa said calmly, descending the stairs.
Giselle's face turned pale instantly.
"You misunderstood, Elsa," she said softly, looking embarrassed.
"Ms. Montague, I'm always steady and consistent, neither too warm nor too cold. I don't think I've done anything to mistreat you, making you stay up late to complain to my uncle."
Elsa continued calmly, "We're all adults here. I don't rely on my grandmother and uncle for support. Ms. Montague, do you expect them to punish me by making me stand in the corner?"
Seeing Elsa's displeasure, Jonathan, caught in the middle, felt awkward.
"Elsa, it's best to clear the air," he said, clearing his throat.
"Alright, then, tell me how I've excluded Ms. Montague. Ms. Montague, please explain," Elsa said with a faint smile, sitting on the living room sofa.
"I'm sorry, it's my fault for not finding my place." Giselle's face grew even paler, her voice trembling.
"Then please find it from now on."
Elsa didn't spare Giselle another glance and walked out the door.
The next evening, Giselle started making excuses to avoid joining them for dinner.
