Chapter 253 Farewell Instructions
In the end, it was Max who stepped in to mediate.
"You two are basically having an amicable divorce. It's not like you won't see each other again, so there's no need to settle everything so precisely today."
He continued. "Ms. Miller isn't in good health right now. Forcing Dalton Banks on her would probably just add to her stress."
He glanced at Luke's unreadable expression and quickly turned to Elsa. "You don't need to rush to return this office building to Mr. Taylor. Just consider it a loan from him. When the value goes up, you can sell it and pay him back."
In that moment, Elsa suddenly felt that Max made a lot of sense.
If Luke didn't want the building, she could just sell it and transfer the money to his company. It would be the same. In any case, she wouldn't be taking advantage of him.
Seeing Elsa's expression soften, Max seized the opportunity. "Why don't we handle the paperwork first and deal with the rest later?"
As soon as he said it, Max caught a glimpse of Luke's even colder expression and immediately regretted his words.
"Alright." Elsa agreed, and looked at Luke. "Just the two of us go, okay?"
She wanted to seize a moment alone to warn him. In such sensitive times, some things were not safe to discuss over messages or phone calls.
Luke didn't understand her intention but cherished the remaining time they had together.
He nodded and took Elsa's coat to help her put it on.
"Thank you. There won't be another chance like this," Elsa said with a smile, her eyes filled with a complex emotion he couldn't understand.
They went downstairs to the parking lot. Elsa, still recovering from her illness, was almost knocked over by the crowded elevator.
Luke reached out to support her by the waist. To his surprise, she didn't pull away but even leaned closer to his chest.
Luke's heart pounded like a drum.
He thought she had something to say to him, but Elsa remained unusually silent throughout the drive.
She seemed lost in thought, maintaining her posture without moving.
Luke drove much slower than usual, causing the drivers behind them to honk impatiently several times.
A journey that should have taken 20 minutes ended up taking him an hour. Coupled with the time they spent in the hospital room, forcing each other to sign the documents, by the time they arrived at the Marriage License Bureau, it was almost closing time.
"On our wedding day, we also came just before closing." Elsa couldn't help but laugh.
She smiled frequently today.
Luke frowned and turned to look at her. "Are you happy about the divorce?"
Elsa felt a bit awkward. "It's alright."
Luke, feeling frustrated, remained silent as they completed the paperwork. In less than 20 minutes, they had their divorce certificate in hand.
Elsa could no longer smile.
"Thank you. I've been very fortunate this past year," she said in the parking lot of the Marriage License Bureau.
Luke frowned but said nothing.
"One last hug," Elsa said, opening her arms.
Luke hesitated for a second. The divorce was something he had opposed, which had led to such an ugly situation.
If he wanted to maintain the last shred of dignity, he should have walked away without looking back.
But he couldn't do it. Seeing her frail, outstretched arms, he only wanted to hold Elsa tightly.
Luke did hug her so tightly that she struggled to breathe.
"Luke, remember, you know nothing about the grudges between me and the Miller family. If you happened to help me with anything, it was because I deceived you." Elsa whispered into Luke's chest.
Luke's nerves jolted!
