Chapter 98 Stayed Out All Night
"With Luke's resources, how could he have just one car?" Jonathan asked, baffled.
'He casually gave away a $15 million pink diamond, but let Elsa walk down the mountain?' Jonathan wondered.
"He has plenty of cars, but I don't want to use his stuff without asking," Elsa said honestly. Even though she'd only met Jonathan four times, she felt a strange familiarity with him and couldn't help but let her guard down.
Jonathan kept his eyes on the road. "You two are married. You can use everything he owns—money, power, connections. It's all yours if you want it."
"You've looked into me, so you know my marriage to Luke isn't exactly above board," Elsa said.
"So what?" Jonathan glanced at her. After a few interactions, he was convinced Elsa didn't marry Luke for his money or power.
"I forced him to marry me. I shouldn't spend his money," Elsa explained.
"Do you really think money matters to him?" Jonathan laughed, remembering the day Luke had warned him to stay away from Elsa, even if it meant costing him his fortune.
"Maybe, but there's nothing more I can do for him." Elsa felt a tightness in her chest and took a deep breath.
"When you're feeling down, come over to my place. Eric's got a big gaming room. He can show you some games," Jonathan said as they pulled up to the Taylor Group building.
"Thanks." Elsa forced a smile. Jonathan had been incredibly kind to her.
"No need to be polite. I feel a connection with you," Jonathan said.
Like Elsa, Jonathan felt an inexplicable familiarity with her, as if they'd known each other forever.
After saying goodbye to Jonathan, Elsa got in the elevator and ran into Ava Davis, another intern. Elsa nodded in greeting.
"You're something else. Even when Mr. Taylor's not around, you have other guys in luxury cars dropping you off," Ava said suddenly.
Elsa was momentarily taken aback.
They usually worked with different design teams. Their only interaction was the last Dalton Banks design competition where Ava came in second, and Elsa's forced withdrawal handed the trophy and prize money to Ava.
Since Max and Luke had shown up at the office to support Elsa, she hadn't seen this kind of smug behavior from her colleagues. Why was Ava being so sarcastic today?
"Do you like Luke Taylor too?" Elsa couldn't help but ask. If not, she couldn't understand Ava's reason for mocking her.
"Do you think I'm like you, only capable of pleasing Mr. Taylor with my looks?" Ava's tone was full of disdain and anger.
"In terms of looks, I'm better than you. And I won the last design competition," Elsa retorted, not holding back since Ava was being rude. "We're colleagues. If you're going to be sarcastic, at least have a reason."
"Elsa Miller, there will be international judges on the panel of the end-of-month competition. If you have the guts, sleep your way through it to get a permanent position!" Ava snapped, losing control.
Realization dawned upon Elsa. Margaret had arranged a five-to-one competition to make the other four target her.
Ava's harsh words came from the belief that she had worked hard to get into Dalton Banks, while Elsa had been effortlessly pushed in by Luke, which seemed unfair.
Under Margaret's influence, Ava and the other three female interns saw Elsa as a mediocre designer who only used her body to climb the ranks. They ignored Elsa's design talent and conveniently forgot she was the true champion of the design competition.
"A permanent position is just a formality. Since I'm Mrs. Taylor of the Taylor Group, half the company is mine. Even if I don't get the job, I lose nothing, right?" Elsa said haughtily, her tone icy.
Since Ava accused Elsa of relying on Luke, Elsa decided to bring Luke into the conversation and see how she would respond.
Ava was indeed infuriated. "Don't be so smug. The Taylor Group's Mrs. Taylor might soon have the last name Collins!"
'Luke has already started staying out all night,' Elsa thought to herself.
But she said, "But right now, Mrs. Taylor's last name is Miller. Does that bother you?"
As they argued, the elevator reached the 15th floor. Elsa stepped out without giving Ava another glance.
