Chapter 192 Giving Up
David zeroed in on Elsa, while Karen was off trying to get help from Margaret.
Margaret had fed Debbie some bad info before. It didn't directly tie into Luke getting ambushed by Sean, but it sure stirred up some drama between Debbie and Luke.
Debbie did some digging on Leslie and found out that after her early divorce, she raised Elsa and Vincent on her own, working as a simultaneous interpreter. No sign of the "misconduct" Margaret had mentioned. Actually, it was David who let Phyllis control the heart source for Vincent's heart transplant, proving he was capable of great cruelty.
This whole mess made Debbie look like the bad guy, and she felt tricked by Margaret again, souring her opinion of her.
Margaret tried to test the waters by sending Debbie warm messages every morning and night. Seeing Debbie's growing coldness, she realized Debbie was onto her and rushed over to the Taylor Family Estate with some gifts.
Debbie had someone bring Margaret in. While sipping tea, she glanced at Margaret and said coolly, "Joe's health isn't great. Spend more time with him. You don't need to visit me. I don't need anything, so take your stuff back."
"It's just a small gesture. Joe's always worried about your health and asked me to check on you more often," Margaret quickly replied.
Debbie smirked slightly, her tone indifferent. "I'm getting old, and sometimes I gossip; my mind gets muddled, and I can't tell truth from lies, which just adds to my troubles. From now on, if you want to go after Luke, do it yourself. Leave me out of it."
Debbie's words were already pretty polite.
Margaret's face twisted.
"Debbie, I was tricked by Karen! Really! She played on my feelings for Luke and told me those things. I'm sorry."
She explained with teary eyes, using the same lines she had used to calm Luke.
Debbie stayed silent.
Right then, Margaret's phone rang at the worst possible moment.
She glanced at the caller ID and quickly hung up.
But Margaret underestimated Karen's persistence. Soon, Karen called again.
"Go ahead and answer it," Debbie said calmly.
Margaret's expression changed, but she had no choice but to answer.
Before Karen could speak, Margaret quickly said, "I'm not buying a house. Stop calling!" And she hung up immediately.
Margaret hadn't saved Karen's number, but the number was distinctive. When she was engaged to Luke, Karen frequently called Debbie to check on her, so Debbie recognized it right away.
Debbie said nothing, just quietly watched Margaret's performance.
Later, she yawned and said with a hint of apology, "I'm tired. Shall I have a servant keep you company for a while?"
Reluctantly, Margaret left.
"Ms. Collins looked so pitiful crying." The servant, knowing Debbie had always liked Margaret, said sincerely as she watched her leave.
"It's too late to cry now." Debbie sighed.
She wasn't surprised that women would compete for Luke, given his excellence. Debbie had thought Margaret was just spoiled and had indulged her.
Now it seemed that compared to Margaret, the straightforward Elsa was more honest and forthright.
But if Elsa became Luke's wife, she would inevitably become his weakness.
Whenever Debbie thought of Elsa, a headache would ensue.
The more she got involved, the worse things got. She decided to meddle less in the future.
'I don't like Elsa, so I will just avoid her!' Debbie thought helplessly.
