Chapter 165 It's So Hard to Stay Alive

After flipping through her diary, Luke stormed back to his room, waiting for Elsa to come crawling with an apology. But nope, she was a no-show, even when the sun dipped.

Peeking down from the second floor, he spotted Elsa curled up on the couch, chain-smoking like a chimney.

She was deep in thought, lost in a cloud of smoke, looking all ghostly and sad.

She screwed up, and yet he had to be the one to comfort her? Seriously?

Luke was boiling but stomped downstairs anyway.

"Can I sleep?" Elsa asked, her gaze vacant and slightly bewildered, as she looked at Luke in his robe.

When had she ever been like this? Even with a gun to her head, Elsa wouldn't be this wary.

"Get upstairs and sleep. Don't stay down here," Luke said.

He then turned and walked away. Elsa quickly followed.

After a quick wash, she took her meds and saw Luke lying on the bed, scrolling through his phone. She gingerly lifted one side of the blanket and lay down.

Seeing her lying so far away, Luke got instantly pissed. He killed the lights and yanked Elsa into his arms in the dark. "Sleep."

Elsa let out a muffled groan of pain.

Luke flicked the light back on and untied her robe, frowning at her swollen shoulder. "Don't you know to dodge when you're in danger?"

'I tried but failed,' Elsa thought silently.

Luke sighed and lifted her pant leg. Seeing the bloodstains on her white pants, he knew it was bad. Even though he was ready for it, her scabbed wound still hit him hard.

By the light, he checked her body. The scars on her arms had faded but were still there.

Remembering the night she self-harmed in the bathroom, all his anger melted away.

He grabbed some ointment from the first aid kit and applied it to her shoulder.

The medicine kicked in, and Elsa started to get sleepy.

"The body is a temple," Luke said.

Elsa found out Luke was pretty well-read after marrying him. She had thought he only read history at first, just like he thought she only read design books.

"No matter what it worships, it should be stronger, more beautiful, and cleaner," Elsa mumbled.

"Elsa, have you achieved that? Only cowards self-harm. Only cowards let others hurt them," Luke said harshly, holding her chin and looking into her sleepy eyes.

Elsa's drowsiness faded a bit, and she stared at Luke for a long time without saying a word.

"But it's so hard to keep living, Luke," she suddenly said after a while.

She reached out to hug his waist, burying her head in his chest.

Luke's heart skipped a beat.

'Does living cause her pain? Even being with me hasn't made it better?' Luke thought. 'Why is Elsa so different from other women? There are so many women who aren't troublesome, yet I chose her, and now I always end up angry with Elsa. Forget it, she's my person, and I have to protect her no matter what.'

Luke gently stroked Elsa's back like petting a cat. Only when she fell into a deep sleep did he take out his phone.

He asked point-blank, "Mom, did you cause the injuries on Elsa's face and shoulder?"

"So what if I did? I can't accept this daughter-in-law! She brought shame to the Taylor family!" Debbie was still awake, clearly still fuming about what happened during the day, and hot back swiftly.

"Mom, I'll say it one more time. Elsa is my wife. If you keep this up, you'll lose not just a daughter-in-law but also me," Luke stated firmly.

"Luke, you're breaking your mother's heart!" Debbie was furious. Before Luke could say anything else, he found that Debbie had already blocked him.
