Chapter 35: Jealousy
"Elsa, it's you who seduced Luke and took him away from me. You, a third party who destroys others' relationships, dare act so nonchalantly?" Karen was stimulated by the scene and stood up abruptly.
"I didn't take your fiancé away. You know that." Elsa turned around, looking at her indifferently, saying with disdain, "Why not just admit it? Why play these little tricks? You cling to my man like a dog, and now you feel humiliated?"
Elsa's words made Karen so embarrassed that she wished she could find a hole to hide in. She always cared about her public image, especially in front of Luke and his friends, trying hard to appear dignified and generous. But at this moment, she had become a laughingstock.
Karen said, "Luke, I'll see you tomorrow." She then ran out crying.
"Elsa, do you have to be so cruel?" Luke frowned as he watched Karen leave. He had already decided to marry her, so why did she have to belittle Karen?
In fact, Luke felt a bit guilty and sorry for Karen. Karen had let her mother control the search for Vincent's new heart and showed no mercy toward her half-brother. However, these were all internal matters of the Miller family. Luke had let her down and initiated the cancellation of the engagement, which was indeed his fault.
Elsa shrugged indifferently. "Then I'll come see you tomorrow too," she said.
In that moment just now, she suddenly understood the intention of Luke asking her to feed him water. It was a way to make Karen completely surrender, a form of protection in disguise.
Since they met, Luke had been biased against her. Even now, as they were about to get married, he still regarded her as cruel. In Luke's eyes, Karen was indeed gentle and kind.
This realization left Elsa feeling frustrated, and she couldn't help but show a displeased expression on her face. 'It's meaningless to have him marry me if he still has such views about me,' she thought.
Luke noticed Elsa's expression changing. "Elsa, stay here to take care of me," he demanded as a matter of course.
"There are senior nurses in the VIP ward." Elsa played with her phone on the couch, not even looking at Luke.
This calm and indifferent woman, who could smile even when humiliated, was now throwing a tantrum at him. This new understanding made Luke feel refreshed, instantly lightening his mood.
"Come here," Luke said again, patting the bed beside him. She walked over slowly.
Luke embraced her slender waist with his uninjured left arm, holding her close. "Are you jealous?" he asked, lifting her chin to make her look at him.
In her heart, Elsa wondered if she had been jealous just now. But she countered, "Shouldn't I be jealous?"
Seeing a hint of embarrassment in her eyes, Luke realized that although Elsa appeared outgoing, she was actually quite naive. She was trembling even during their first time making love. The memory of their first time together made Luke's heart race.
"I was not really protecting her. If it were someone else, I would have avoided it too," Luke suddenly explained.
Elsa took a long time to react before understanding why he got into the accident.
"Oh," she couldn't be bothered to argue with him.
Her response made Luke feel like she was questioning him, which irritated him.
"You are the only woman I've slept with, and that's a significant reason why I want to marry you," Luke continued.
Elsa remained silent, just looking at Luke quietly, waiting for him to continue.
"But I hope you can be gentle and not always so cruel. If you keep being like this, I can protect you when I'm around, but you might be in danger when I'm not," Luke spoke sincerely.
They had made love many times, but they were strangers who weren't even friends on Facebook.
A strange feeling welled up in Elsa's heart. She had lost her angry demeanor from earlier, and a mist clouded her gaze as she looked at Luke.
If her mother hadn't been driven to death by Phyllis and Karen, she wouldn't have insisted on marrying into the Taylor family, putting Luke in such a difficult position. Perhaps, their lives wouldn't have intersected at all.
She wouldn't be as sensitive and cruel as she was now.
"Yes," Elsa replied, thinking of her purpose in coming here. "You were involved in the search for Vincent's new heart, right?"
Luke didn't deny it, only saying, "That matter has been resolved. If any problems arise in the future, I hope you'll think of me first, not Jonny or any other man."
