Chapter 329 Ian's Interview
Hailey came from a prominent family and has a beautiful face. She has always been the one to look down on others, never the other way around.
She felt humiliated by Luke and returned home in tears.
The next day, as soon as Luke arrived at the company, Max brought him an invitation to visit the Phillips family.
Luke had received favors from Ian before, so he couldn't be neglectful. He asked Max to prepare a box of gold bars to bring along.
He thought he would have to deal with Hailey again and was mentally prepared for it. However, he was led by the secretary to Ian's study, where only Ian was present.
"Mr. Phillips," Luke greeted politely, handing over the gift.
"Luke, no need to be so formal," Ian smiled kindly at Luke, adopting a friendly demeanor.
Luke followed suit, "Ian."
Ian nodded in response and personally poured Luke a cup of tea.
"It's my fault for not teaching my daughter well. Hailey is too willful. I saw you got divorced and thought you might get along with Hailey, but who knew she would get so attached," Ian said straightforwardly, handing the tea to Luke.
"Luke, tell me, do you really have no feelings for Hailey at all?"
Luke pursed his lips, his eyes deep and dark, "Ian, Hailey is a good girl, beautiful and cute, but I can only see her as a sister. Please find someone else for her."
Ian, after all, had some leverage over Luke and didn't dare to be too aggressive. They were like two ends of a scale, neither could afford to tip too much.
"Hailey is just unlucky," Ian sighed.
"Ian, don't say that. It's me who's unlucky," Luke responded calmly.
"Sienna and I had Hailey late in life, and we've spoiled her. I understand if you don't like her or want to marry her. She cried so much last night that she didn't sleep well and went to the hospital this morning. If you still consider me your uncle, even if you have to pretend, please be nice to her for a while. She's just a child at heart; who knows, she might fancy someone else soon," Ian's words were almost pleading.
"Ian, I don't want to deceive her," Luke said sincerely. To him, Hailey was just a simple girl, and he saw no need to deceive her feelings.
Ian shook his head and sighed, "I'd rather you deceive her. I don't want you to marry her, just accompany her for a few months, even if it's just to humor her, comfort her, deceive her, as long as she doesn't get so upset that it affects her health."
Luke remained silent.
"Think about it. I'm old now, living for my children. If Hailey is happy, I'm happy. If Hailey is sad, I feel bad too and might do something irrational."
This last statement was a blatant threat.
Luke's previously mild expression turned cold and stern. He put down his teacup and slowly stood up, "If Mr. Phillips wants me to deceive Hailey's feelings, I don't mind being the bad guy."
"Luke, I have faith in Hailey. The whole world loves her; making you fall for her won't be hard," Ian softened his tone again.
"Three months. I'll play along for three months at most."
Although Luke had spent a lot of money, Ian had been instrumental in Elsa's matter, so Luke had some gratitude towards him.
Now that Ian was forcing Hailey on him, he couldn't blame Luke for being cold-hearted.
Luke took out a cigarette and lit it in front of Ian. Ian didn't smoke, and no one dared to smoke in front of him. Luke knew he was the first.
Sure enough, Ian frowned slightly but quickly returned to his usual expression, "Of course, if you two are not suitable and want to part ways, no one can say anything. But I have faith in Hailey; you will definitely like her."
"Hope it goes as you wish." Luke smiled ambiguously and left.
"He really is something, forcing a man who doesn't love his daughter to put on a show."
"Isn't that the truth? Hailey is unlucky to have such a father."
That evening, Luke was drinking with Karida and Terry and mentioned the matter, leaving them puzzled.
Luke's face carried a chilling anger as he slowly said, "Ian started his political career at twenty and only became mayor in his fifties. There's a reason for his unsteady career."
"Are you going to intervene?" Terry couldn't help but ask.
"Luke, business and politics have always been intertwined. Don't act rashly!" Karida also became serious.
Luke smirked, "I gave Ian some face, and he thinks he owns all of Maplewood City now. He should know that as long as I'm here, Maplewood City won't be his to control."
The murderous look on his face startled them.
