Chapter 438 Sleeping One More Time Is Okay
Giselle had been keeping tabs on Jonathan and knew he had splurged on an emerald necklace. What she didn't know was that a few days later, Chloe ended up with it.
Giselle had been bragging nonstop about how much Jonathan valued her, even calling a pair of diamond earrings he gave her a "token of love." But Chloe, cool as a cucumber, pulled out the nearly ten-million-dollar necklace and said it was an apology gift from Jonathan, asking Giselle to return it for her.
The earrings, worth only a few thousand dollars, were blown out of proportion by Giselle, making her look petty and inexperienced next to Chloe's calm demeanor.
Realizing this, Giselle's face soured.
"Ms. Clark..." She stammered, unsure how to save face.
But Chloe wasn't out to humiliate her.
"Please, Ms. Montague, they say you shouldn't accept gifts you haven't earned. This necklace is way too valuable for me. Mr. King is a stickler; if I return it to him directly, he won't take it back. I'm counting on you," Chloe said politely, giving Giselle an out.
Giselle's face remained grim as she left.
After Giselle was gone, Elsa emerged from the lounge.
She looked at Chloe with a half-smile. "You just handed it over like that? Aren't you worried she'll twist the story to Uncle Jonathan?"
"A gentleman helps others achieve their goals," Chloe shrugged. "If tarnishing my name helps Ms. Montague get what she wants, then so be it."
"Do you really have no feelings left for Uncle Jonathan?" Elsa asked, for what felt like the hundredth time.
"People aren't made of stone; it's impossible to have no feelings at all. But I can control myself and avoid getting tangled up with him," Chloe replied.
"Suit yourself. But the things Giselle said earlier were really..." Elsa struggled to hold back her anger. Giselle was a piece of work, vicious and manipulative.
"If I loved Mr. King, those words would have hit my weak spot. But now that I don't care, it's just like watching a performance," Chloe laughed.
She wasn't afraid of what Giselle might say to Jonathan, nor did she care. But Jonathan did care.
That night, when Chloe got home, Jonathan pinned her against the wall by the door.
"Chloe, how come I never knew you were so hard to please?" He said, his forehead veins bulging with suppressed anger.
"I don't understand what you mean," Chloe said, pressed against the wall, their bodies touching. Jonathan's body radiated a heat that made it hard for Chloe to breathe.
"Giselle is my mother's goddaughter. She was in trouble, and I couldn't just ignore it. I helped her out, and you make a big deal out of it? I can't even make it up to you with a late-night snack or a gift. Giselle came to see you in person, and you still acted like this, even making her return the necklace!"
Giselle had informed Jonathan she was going to see Chloe to explain things and hoped Chloe wouldn't misunderstand. Jonathan, still angry with Chloe, had casually said, "Do as you please," and didn't think much of it.
But when Giselle returned with the necklace, saying Chloe wanted no further contact, Jonathan's pent-up anger exploded.
Chloe couldn't be bothered to explain. "If you know I'm hard to please, then stop bothering me. Mr. King, is losing a sex partner really such a big deal?"
She had always defined their relationship in such blunt terms, which infuriated Jonathan.
"If it's just a sex partner, then one more time shouldn't matter."
Jonathan forcefully kissed Chloe, silencing her protests.
