Chapter 376 I Loved Her
Terry stood his ground, unfazed by Luke's outburst.
After a long silence, seeing Luke finally calm down, he spoke, "Luke, you know I'm not trying to manipulate you with some sob story. I messed up. I shouldn't have lied to you because of Margaret. I've thought it over, and I can't lose you as a friend. If you follow my plan, I'll willingly go to jail. But I have one condition..."
"Luke, if I go to prison, this matter is settled. It won't be a wall between us anymore."
Terry's expression was resolute, as if he was trying to see into Luke's soul.
"Once you're in, and then out, the Clark family might not be under your control anymore," Luke sneered, waving the stack of papers. "Terry, handing over your Achilles' heel so easily, you're a fool!"
He was careful, but what if this data fell into the wrong hands?
"I can't worry about that now! Luke, I've been living in agony these past few days!" Terry's eyes were filled with sorrow, and he forced a bitter smile. "You might not believe me, but I loved Margaret too, and not any later than you did."
"I thought I could bury those feelings deep inside, but that night, she reached out to me."
"If the woman you love holds you and says, 'Let's make love, and you help me win over Luke,' how would you feel? At that moment, I was devastated and had lost all reason."
"Luke, at first, I was indeed out of my mind. Later, I only felt hatred and contempt for Margaret for playing with my emotions. I know you too well; you don't truly love her. So, sleeping with her didn't weigh on my conscience. But from start to finish, I was wrong."
Terry's voice was hoarse, and he sounded exhausted. "So, no matter how you handle this, I'll accept it. But I can't accept us becoming strangers. Luke, punish me however you want!"
Luke's brow furrowed deeply.
Terry's words shocked him. He thought he knew Terry inside out, with no secrets between them. Yet, he had no idea Terry had loved Margaret. He had always assumed it was just two adults giving in to their desires and Margaret seeking something from Terry.
"When did you start loving her?"
"A long time ago, back when we were in school. Seeing you two laughing together always made me sad. But Luke, Margaret and I never crossed the line until that night she asked me out for drinks, I swear!"
If it weren't for that night, Terry would have kept his feelings buried. He wouldn't have discovered Margaret's true nature so soon.
After that, being with her was just a physical release. No affection, because he felt Margaret didn't deserve it.
"Terry, I would have preferred you challenged me for Margaret. I would have stepped aside for you," Luke said sincerely. He only had a vague fondness for Margaret, nothing like the intense love he felt for Elsa. But by the time others realized this, it was too late.
"Luke, my intention was to bring you two together. It was all fate's doing," Terry sighed.
Luke remained silent for a long time.
He believed everything Terry said.
This matter could be big or small. What angered him was Terry's secrecy, preventing him from seeing the truth sooner.
