Chapter 437 Giselle Visits

Giselle had a knack for disguises, possessing a natural charm that could instantly turn any man into a bumbling fool, willing to do anything for her.

If Elsa and Chloe hadn't already fallen for her tricks and discovered her true nature by chance, they too would have wanted to protect her.

Take today, for instance. She wore a white duffle coat, her straight hair cascading down her back, flat shoes on her feet, no makeup, and no bag—she looked just like a college student.

Chloe couldn't help but feel a pang of doubt, 'Had they all misjudged Giselle? Maybe, deep down, she really was just a shy and simple person.'

"Hey, Ms. Clark, I'm really sorry about yesterday. I didn't mean to interrupt your dinner with Mr. King."

As soon as she walked in, she apologized with a hint of regret. "I came to make amends."

"It's no problem at all, Ms. Montague. We were almost done eating anyway. I'm just glad you're okay." Seeing her extend an olive branch, Chloe responded politely, inviting Giselle to sit and quickly ordering some good coffee.

Maybe they had misjudged her. Maybe she wasn't as calculating as they thought.

Chloe looked at Giselle's pale face and felt a twinge of sympathy.

"Over the years, Mr. King has gotten used to protecting me and keeping my concerns close to his heart. Sometimes, he might overlook you or Elsa. Considering I'm a dying woman, I hope you won't take it to heart." Giselle took a sip of coffee and suddenly said.

Chloe knew she shouldn't hold a grudge against someone with terminal cancer, but the weight of Giselle's words made her uncomfortable.

Giselle didn't seem like someone with low emotional intelligence. What did she mean by that first part? Jonathan was used to treating her the best, and Elsa and I were just being petty? Did she misunderstand?

Chloe took a sip of her coffee, maintaining a calm exterior. "Of course not. Mr. King and I are just friends. Why would I mind his personal matters with you? As for Elsa, she has Luke doting on her, so she doesn't care much about these things either."

"That's good to hear," Giselle said. "Ever since I lost that pair of diamond earrings, I've been distracted and failed to keep many secrets. If it affected your relationship with Mr. King, I truly apologize."

Her tone was full of self-blame, evoking sympathy.

But her words were cleverly crafted, revealing her and Jonathan's secrets in a way that was ambiguous and couldn't be used against her.

Chloe smiled. "It won't affect us because Mr. King and I are in the past. But, Ms. Montague, what secrets between you and Mr. King were leaked? Do tell."

She realized her earlier sympathy was misplaced. She hadn't misjudged Giselle after all.

"If Ms. Clark wants to know, I don't mind sharing. Mr. King and I had feelings for each other, but I was too young at the time, and he didn't want to hurt me. Those earrings were a token of our affection."

Giselle sighed, her eyes suddenly welling up with tears.

"But, Ms. Clark, please don't take it to heart. It's all in the past. He didn't want to hurt me because of my age, but he could be with you, which shows he has a deeper connection with you. When I'm gone, please take good care of him."

The implication was clear: Jonathan didn't want to hurt Giselle because of their age difference, but he could be with Chloe, indicating he didn't feel the need to protect Chloe as much, making the comparison stark.

Chloe felt a headache from Giselle's manipulative words, but maintained her composure with a polite smile. "Ms. Montague, as I said, Mr. King and I are in the past. Please take care of yourself so you can be with Mr. King for a long time."

Giselle chatted with Chloe about various topics, but seeing no cracks in Chloe's demeanor, she finally stood to leave. She was puzzled: Had Chloe really moved on?

Chloe noticed the fleeting look of doubt in Giselle's eyes and, as Giselle was about to leave, suddenly said, "Ms. Montague, please wait. Could you return this to Mr. King for me?"

She picked up an emerald necklace from her desk and handed it to Giselle. "Mr. King sent this as an apology yesterday. I'm not upset, so there's no need for such an expensive gift. Please take it back."

The moment Giselle saw the necklace, her face turned ashen.
