Chapter 425 Settle the Prostitution Fee
Chloe was puzzled when Jonathan picked her up.
What was going on?
Had she done something yesterday to make Jonathan misunderstand her again? This guy was really something. If he didn't love her, why did he keep giving her hope?
But she wasn't the same Chloe who used to tiptoe around him because she loved him.
Jonathan carried Chloe to the couch, then grabbed a small blanket and draped it over her legs. "It's freezing outside, and you went out drinking dressed like that, standing barefoot on the floor. Aren't you worried about getting sick?"
Chloe didn't respond to his words, just watched his actions in silence. After a while, she suddenly laughed.
"If it were the old me, being held by you like this, I'd probably be so excited my heart would leap out of my chest."
The old her... In other words, she didn't care anymore.
Jonathan caught the underlying meaning, and his smile became a bit forced.
"Did I make you suffer a lot back then?"
His eyes glanced at Chloe's arm, and she understood.
"It wasn't that bad," Chloe laughed again. "You were very gentlemanly, considering you were being pestered by a woman you didn't love. It wasn't your fault; it was mine, being stubborn."
She rolled up her sleeve to show him her arm. "Back then, I was too obsessed. The more I couldn't have you, the harder it was to let go."
Jonathan's frown deepened. "How can you let go now?"
"Love is like a battlefield; you can't always win. Now, I've chosen to accept it, and everything's become clear."
She didn't say anything that required his comfort, and he couldn't find a way to make amends.
"Is it because of Giselle? I've always seen Giselle as just a kid."
Jonathan's private life was relatively clean. Since his ex-wife passed away, he had been celibate for many years. Besides Chloe, he hadn't been involved with any other women. Apart from Giselle, he couldn't think of any other reason.
"No, it's just that at that moment, I suddenly felt like I was no different from any other woman in your eyes. Of course, I can't blame you. You've always said you couldn't love me. It was me who insisted." Chloe's eyes showed a fleeting sadness, but it was just a flash.
"In the past, I read that men and women have different emotional strategies. Men don't need to be picky if they don't want marriage, while women can theoretically get any man they want if they don't want marriage. So Schwarzenegger got involved with his housekeeper. Then I told myself, if you don't love me, that's fine. At least I have your body. But I overlooked one thing: if other women also shamelessly followed my example..."
"Chloe," Jonathan interrupted her, displeased. "Do you think I haven't faced any temptations in the twenty years I've been single?"
What did she take him for? Did she really think Jonathan wasn't picky at all?
There were plenty of women more exaggerated than her who threw themselves at him. The reason he was with Chloe was because of his instincts!
His ex-wife died when he loved her the most and felt the most guilty. Rationally, he would always love her alone.
But people were complicated, and he could never deny his feelings for Chloe.
Besides, what kind of example was she giving? Schwarzenegger and the housekeeper? Chloe was a princess, meant to be cherished, not to compare herself to a housekeeper.
Jonathan felt a tightness in his chest, and his face darkened considerably.
Chloe closed her mouth, watching him in silence. Then she got up, picked up her clothes, and went to the bathroom to change. She was already starting to avoid him, and this realization made Jonathan furious.
After a while, Chloe came out, flashing a smile. "Thanks for taking care of me, Mr. King. I need to get to work."
Jonathan felt his blood rush to his head.
"Very well, Chloe."
She knew how to anger a man, and Jonathan feared that if he didn't control himself, he might have a stroke.
"I'll send last night's video to your phone later. Remember to settle my fee for the night."
