Chapter 275 Owing Sixty Million Dollars
Luke slammed the door as he left, and Elsa sat on the couch, listening to the apartment door being forcefully opened and closed, covering her ears in frustration.
His fierce look showed that he was truly angry..
The grievances between her and Luke were too complicated to untangle. Sorting out the finances was one of the few things she could manage.
Since they had once loved each other, they should part ways with dignity. That was her only wish.
The Taylor Group's Finance Department.
"Ms. Miller, these are the expenses Mr. Taylor incurred on you during the marriage. Anything under a million dollars has been disregarded. This list includes several large expenditures."
The person handling Elsa's case was Jack Campbell, the CFO of the Taylor Group. He couldn't help but marvel yesterday while compiling the data, 'What's so great about marrying a rich man? When she gets divorced, she still has to account for every penny! Luke is quite generous, but if she had married a penny-pincher, she might have ended up in jail. Poor Elsa, she dreamed of being a rich woman for a year, only to wake up owing Luke so much money.'
Elsa took the bill and a large stack of receipts from him as his face was full of pity.
From Vincent's heart transplant and nursing home fees to the recent expenses for Ian, every cost was itemized until Elsa saw the quote for that road.
She took out her phone and called Luke, who answered quickly.
She asked, "What road costs forty million dollars per mile?"
He replied, "The highway between the two counties in Light City."
A highway would indeed cost that much.
"How much did you build?"
"Didn't Jack show you the invoice? Thirty miles."
Luke had spent 1.2 billion dollars just to get her to speak to Joseph.
Elsa took a deep breath, regretting how she wanted to settle the accounts with him yesterday. "You can't calculate it like that. Investing in a highway includes toll booths and service areas to recoup the costs."
"This section of the road will take two years to complete. The revenue after two years can be yours," Luke's tone was calm and indifferent.
Elsa was impressed and softened her stance. "Then, can I pay you back in two years?"
"Elsa, if we're going to settle accounts clearly, let's sign an agreement. If you repay all the debt within a year, it's good. If not, you'll be bound to me for the rest of your life, at my disposal. If I'm still interested in you, we can remarry. But as you know, men's hearts change quickly; if I'm no longer interested, I might sell you off to work on railroads abroad."
When Elsa called, Luke was listening to senior executives report on their work. He casually made a pause gesture and leaned back in his chair to negotiate with her.
He was no longer the one who was overwhelmed with jealousy and heartache last night. Now, he was calm, rational, and in control, with a tone full of malice.
Elsa bit her lip. If she had known the amount was so huge, she wouldn't have been so insistent. This money was a drop in the bucket for Luke, but for her, earning it was a matter of life and death.
"Can't we negotiate the timeline?"
Luke sneered. "Do you think everyone should listen to you?"
The words were harsh, but they made sense.
Elsa thought for a moment. "I'll return the office building to you. Excluding property appreciation and investment earnings, I still owe you over seventy million dollars. I have twenty million dollars maturing soon, which I can use to pay you half first. The remaining ten million,"
She wanted to say she'd invest the rest but felt no need to tell Luke.
"I'll repay the remaining sixty million dollars within a year." she changed her tone.
"Suit yourself." Luke sneered and hung up.
Elsa was always the clever. If she showed some humility, Luke wouldn't make things difficult for her.
He wanted to see if she had the capability to raise sixty million dollars in a year!
"Should I try to persuade Ms. Miller?" Max asked tentatively after everyone had left.
"No need. I want to see where she'll get sixty million dollars from within a year!" Luke's eyes were dark and deep, making Max's heart skip a beat.
