Chapter 30 Karida's Curiosity
"You and Karen are the right match. I shouldn't have come to disturb your life. I'll leave Maplewood City tomorrow," Elsa said, burying her head in Luke's arms.
Luke was angry and pinched her chin to force her to look up. "Elsa, what do you take me for?"
She came to provoke him, but now she wanted to leave him. Luke was so angry with this woman that the veins on his forehead bulged.
"I'm sorry," Elsa said, dejectedly lowering her eyes.
Luke ignored her and walked away.
Elsa tossed and turned all night, unable to sleep. She finally got up and left at 4 a.m.
Luke, also had not slept all night. When he heard the door creak in the next room, he frowned.
"Tell Karida as soon as possible," he messaged Max on Facebook Messenger.
"Got it, Boss." Responding to the boss's messages promptly was a basic quality around Luke.
Elsa left Luke's place and hailed a taxi to the western cemetery.
She wanted to visit Leslie. Once Vincent's surgery was done, they would leave Maplewood City, perhaps never to return.
Elsa knelt in front of Leslie's grave for a whole morning.
She looked at her mother's memorial, with many thoughts in her mind, feeling like there were many things left unsaid.
In the end, she only managed to say, "Mom, I'm sorry. I didn't take care of my brother."
She cried bitterly.
She noticed that her tears had been flowing more than usual these days.
She knelt until almost noon when the hospital suddenly called.
"Elsa, our director has talked to the family of the heart donor, and they have agreed to sign."
"What are their conditions?" Elsa couldn't believe it was true and asked hastily.
"No conditions, they agreed quickly this time. Get ready."
The heart donor was nearing the end of their life, perhaps in the next day or two.
Elsa couldn't believe it.
‘Phyllis had given up so easily? That wasn't her usual style.’ She pondered.
"Can I meet the director?"
Elsa asked cautiously.
This private hospital was one of the best-run hospitals in Maplewood City, with three to five hundred medical staff alone.
For Elsa and Vincent, the heart transplant was a big deal, but for the hospital, it was not unusual.
The director stepping in to help her was eccentric. Elsa feared there might be a bigger conspiracy waiting for her.
There was a pause on the other end. "Let me check with the director first and get back to you."
After about fifteen minutes, the phone rang again.
"Elsa, our director is waiting for you in the office at 2 p.m."
At 2 p.m., Elsa arrived at the director's office.
"Here," Karida pushed his gold-rimmed glasses up and looked at her with a mischievous smile behind the desk.
That day Elsa was sick and hadn't seen Karida's face clearly, but she recognized him at first sight.
Today she noticed that Karida resembled Levi Martin from the TV series, exuding a luxurious yet sophisticated aura.
For some reason, seeing him as the director made Elsa feel much more at ease.
"Thank you for helping us," Elsa placed a card on Karida’s desk.
"The donor's family probably doesn't want to see me. There's $40,000 in this card, please pass it on to them."
"Oh? Making so much money selling alcohol at the Diamond Crest Clubhouse?" Karida raised an eyebrow, full of curiosity in his tone.
"I borrowed it from Chloe, I'll pay her back slowly." Elsa spoke the truth.
She didn't mind his teasing remarks, especially if Vincent's surgery was successful, Karida would also be a lifesaver. A few taunts from him meant nothing.
"I'm curious, though. What did you do to make Luke like you?" Seeing that she wasn't upset, Karida revealed his curiosity once again.
