Chapter 341 Near Death

Elsa's condition was getting worse, and she no longer had the strength to scold Luke to keep his voice down.

Luke was galloping on his horse, the wind and his heartbeat roaring in his ears.

"Don't die, Elsa, don't leave me alone in this world." He gripped the reins so tightly that his nails dug into his palms, but he didn't even notice.

He had never thought he would fall in love with a woman like her, seemingly smart, worldly, calm, and independent, but internally so delicate and troublesome, always getting sick and always so close to death.

The last time he was this frantic was when he found out she was self-harming. She had cut her left arm in the bathroom, and there were several deep wounds that reached the bone.

If she were gone—no, he wouldn't allow that to happen.

Luke rode his horse through the ranch for nearly an hour. The only people he saw along the way were locals herding cattle on horseback, with no motor vehicles in sight. He grew increasingly desperate, and eventually, he was utterly despondent.

Elsa's breathing grew shallower until he could no longer feel her breath.

Luke stopped the horse, sat on the grass, and cradled Elsa in his arms like a baby.

He had never seen her look so bad: her pale face was covered in large, purplish-red hives from an allergic reaction. She was breathing through her mouth because of the discomfort, and her limbs twitched occasionally.

She was barely breathing, teetering on the edge of death, as if she might never wake up again.

Luke's heart sank into an abyss of despair, filled with bitterness and tears.

"Since the day I fell in love with you, I've been afraid you'd encounter danger and suddenly leave me." Luke pressed Elsa's face to his and whispered, "I always wanted to have a child because I thought your adventurous spirit would be tempered by the responsibility, making you cherish your body and life more. But who knew, the child became the catalyst for our divorce, and you ended up like this..."

His voice was hoarse, filled with endless sorrow and affection.

Elsa must have heard him; her tightly closed eyes grew moist.

"I really regret not taking better care of you." Luke's voice eventually failed him.

'Luke, don't be sad.' Elsa wanted to comfort him, to hold him tight, but she found she couldn't move at all.

Was she really going to die like this? Fate was truly unpredictable.

She had survived so many storms, hadn't died seeking revenge for Leslie, hadn't died in prison, and now she was going to die from a cold.

Luke truly did care for her, didn't he?

Her heart ached with a bittersweet pain, but she also felt comforted. It was good to know Luke still loved her.

If she miraculously survived, she should give them both another chance. With this thought, Elsa tried desperately to wake up, even if it was just to open her eyes and see Luke one more time.

But the more anxious she became, the worse she felt, as if countless ants were crawling all over her body. Her flesh and bones no longer felt like her own.

At first, Elsa had some awareness, but eventually, she fell into endless darkness.

Elsa had another long dream. In the dream, she was walking through darkness and suddenly stepped into an abyss. Suddenly, someone grabbed her ankle tightly.

"Elsa, I told you, unless I'm dead, you can't leave me!" It was Luke's voice.

"Luke, let me go and free yourself!"

The pain was unbearable, and hanging in mid-air was too much to bear. She couldn't hold on any longer.

"No, Elsa, I will never let go!"

"Elsa, remember this. Without my permission, you are not allowed to leave me!" Luke's anguished roar echoed in her ears, and Elsa's heart ached deeply.

"Goodbye, Luke, I can't hold on any longer." She plummeted down.

"Luke!" She shouted unconsciously, drenched in cold sweat.

She opened her eyes to see white walls all around her. Elsa realized she was in a hospital. Her colleagues' excited voices surrounded her, "She's awake, she's awake!"

"Elsa, how are you? Is there anywhere that still hurts? Do you need water?"

"Yeah, you slept for so long, you scared us to death!"

"Good thing we got you to the hospital in time. The doctor said if we had been half an hour later, you would have been a goner!"

Her colleagues chattered around her, but Elsa's mind was filled with only one person, Luke.

"Where's Luke? How is he?" she asked with her cracked lips from dehydration.

Just then, Leo walked in, having heard that Elsa was awake. "He has myocarditis and is being treated. He won't die anytime soon."

Luke had myocarditis? It must have been from the exhaustion of riding with her to find a hospital.

Elsa had struggled back from the brink of death, and she remembered being cradled in Luke's arms as he rode.

How long had he ridden? An hour or two?

"Take me to see him," Elsa said, dazed.
