Chapter 444 Does He Love Her?
Hearing her own voice coming through the receiver, Giselle's expression darkened.
But instead of feeling guilty for being caught, she thought, no wonder Chloe sounded so confident that day—she had secretly recorded their conversation!
Panicked, Giselle blurted out, "Yeah, those are my words. No wonder Ms. Clark reacted like that. I was too naive to think she wouldn't record me."
The bitterness in Giselle's voice made Jonathan stop. Maybe he didn't know her as well as he thought, assuming she was just an innocent woman.
"You're wrong. This recording didn't come from Chloe."
Jonathan's earlier sympathy vanished, replaced by a cold tone. "Elsa gave it to me. Without this recording, I wouldn't have known who you really are. Giselle, wearing a mask at King Manor all these years must have been exhausting."
Giselle trembled violently.
Elsa was Chloe's best friend. Whether the recording came from Elsa or Chloe didn't really matter!
Though she felt wronged, Giselle didn't dare to argue anymore.
"Believe it or not, Elsa recorded this when you confronted Chloe that day. Chloe doesn't even know it exists; she didn't even bother to explain herself to me." Jonathan saw through Giselle's thoughts and laid it all out.
"Giselle," he sighed deeply, "the King family has treated you well. What was your goal in doing this? Making the woman I love stay away from me—how does that benefit you?"
Giselle's face turned pale. She had been crying, but now the tears seemed stuck in her deep-set eyes, refusing to fall.
"If there's nothing else, go back to your room and rest. Let's put this behind us and not bring it up again." Jonathan waved her off.
But Giselle wouldn't move.
She stared at Jonathan's sharp, maturely handsome face with a mix of fear and desperation, finally murmuring, "Mr. King, I did all this because I love you."
"When I told you how I felt years ago, you said you couldn't accept someone so much younger than you. I believed you. But Chloe is two years younger than me!"
"When I found out about her, when I saw you both at the hospital, do you know how I felt? Chloe has everything, including your love, while I... I have nothing. No parents, and the man I love loves someone else!"
Tears finally rolled down Giselle's cheeks as she sobbed in front of Jonathan for the first time.
Jonathan pressed his lips together, feeling conflicted. Damn it, he couldn't find fault in what she said.
He had never told Chloe he loved her, but even Giselle could see it.
For Jonathan, loving someone else felt like betraying his late wife. This was why he had stubbornly refused to admit he had fallen for Chloe.
Maybe Giselle was right.
Giselle cried harder, "I admit, my actions were calculated. Mr. King, I was blinded by jealousy. I'll leave the King Manor and never trouble you again."
"Alright, stop crying. It's over, Giselle." Seeing her nearly faint from crying, Jonathan couldn't bear it. He handed her a tissue and gently persuaded her to rest in her room.
He thought Giselle's talk of leaving the King Manor was just an emotional outburst. But the next day, she left a letter and actually left.
